Job description

We’re looking for talented graduates to join our bright, inclusive, supportive software development teams in Cambridge and Manchester.

You’ll be working directly with our customers to solve some of their biggest challenges, which could involve anything from large-scale digital transformation to artificial intelligence. Along the way, you’ll also be making a genuine difference to people’s lives, businesses and society.

Our great working environment, coupled with starting salaries of £38,500 (Cambridge) or £37,000 (Manchester), profit sharing scheme, other benefits and opportunities to build a long and fulfilling career with us, are some of the reasons why we’ve been among the best small companies to work for in the Sunday Times list, 10 years in a row.

Permanent roles start in April, September and November 2022. There’s no set closing date for applications, but we recommend applying asap to secure your preferred start date.

Softwire | About us

Find out from our team of talented and passionate problem solvers how our forward-thinking attitude sets us apart from other digital engineering companies

Your role on the delivery team

Our new-starter training programme will get you up-to-speed with the skills you need to thrive as a professional digital engineer. You’ll get a grounding in coding, source control, modern technology stacks, and more.

Within a few weeks you’ll join one of our teams delivering a client project, usually in our offices but sometimes on a customer site. You’ll get plenty of support throughout, surrounded by helpful colleagues and industry experts to answer all your questions. Alongside your project work, you’ll continue to attend our in-house training programme with your fellow graduates. This industry-leading course lasts six weeks in total, spread over 12 months.

After that, you’ll quickly get opportunities to take on added responsibility in areas that interest you, enabling you to shape your career in a way that genuinely inspires and empowers you to reach your potential.

The Company

Softwire is a successful and growing company of over 200 employees. Our mission is to solve our customers’ business challenges using technology. This often demands creativity, tackling complex issues in intelligent ways, to help organisations streamline operations and better serve their customers and users.

We have offices in London, Cambridge and Manchester and have featured in the top 25 of the Sunday Times Best Companies list in each of the past ten years. Our employees will tell you that Softwire is a truly great – and totally unique – place to work, with a genuinely relaxed and friendly environment, frequent social events and outings, and great opportunities for giving back to local and not-so-local communities.

The application process

We pride ourselves on our responsiveness and the quality of our customer service, and that extends to the way we treat you as an applicant.

  • At every stage in the process it typically takes less than two working days for you to get a response or receive results.
  • Interviews can be arranged whenever you like, subject to availability and a few days’ notice. You book your own interview slots on our portal.

We also pride ourselves on hiring people with the greatest potential rather than those with prior experience, and we do all we can to bring out the best from you in the interviews by making them as relaxed as possible. We value your time, and we don’t ask you to answer unnecessary questions on application forms or spend hours on preparation.

Our recruitment process consists of a few straightforward stages:

  • Submission of your initial application.
  • Completion of some online tests
  • A short non-technical video interview (with a human not a bot!)
  • A second interview lasting 2-3 hours. This includes a number of technical and logical reasoning tests and requires no preparation.

We sometimes additionally ask students seeking permanent employment to complete a short internship first, lasting up to two weeks.

Why work for us

Softwire is a unique employer with fantastic opportunities for graduate developers and interns. We offer:

  • Hands-on training tailored to your capabilities and delivered by skilled professionals.
  • Highly competitive starting salaries – £40,000 for graduates (London), £28,000 for interns – plus profit share and benefits.
  • Multiple paths for rapid career development, catering to your own individual goals.
  • A genuinely relaxed and friendly working environment which encourages in-office recreation and sensible working hours.
  • Frequent and lively social events and outings – including an annual company holiday abroad!

We've signed the Gradcracker feedback pledge.

(This means that we will supply feedback if requested after an interview.)
