About BDO

A BDO client will generally have some short-term goals and a long-term vision – but standing in their way will often be a number of tax-related issues.

Our job is to act as guides through the complex, ever-changing landscape of tax legislation, to help our clients get where they want to be by the most effective route.

Daniel Hook - BDO Tax Graduate

Daniel Hook shares his experience of the BDO Graduate Programme - Tax stream.

Tax

To do this, we must offer many different tax services. These include day-to-day compliance with the tax authorities, advice on employment taxation and international tax, transaction support for deals such as mergers and acquisitions, VAT services, expatriate tax advice and more. Such a diverse offering means we need similar variety in our team.

We need specialists who can handle the most technically challenging and sector-specific issues, we need versatile and people-focused individuals who can field a wide range of questions from large owner-managed businesses, and we need brilliant innovators who can work on tailored solutions to address a client’s specific circumstances.

Your journey to becoming a BDO tax adviser will begin in the area of compliance – with responsibilities such as providing figures for a company’s statutory accounts, and preparing their corporate tax returns. As you develop, you’ll progress on to more challenging work, such as advising a client’s on tax opportunities and pitfalls. You will also begin to deal directly with HMRC and get to grips with complex tax advisory projects.

You may also get the chance to spend time in one of our specialist tax areas, or in one of our audit groups, to really explore your options and talents and diversify your experience.

Applications are screened on an on-going basis, so we advise you to apply as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

The Rewards

At BDO, we believe in collaboration. For you, this means real experience and bigger responsibilities, earlier than you might expect. It’s easy to be inspired at BDO.

As you’d expect, we offer a competitive salary and first-class benefits package, but trainees often tell us that our friendly and welcoming culture is what really drew them to BDO. Here, your counselling manager or buddy will provide you with support and advice whenever you need it. You’ll also enjoy how easy we make it to balance work and social life, with a variety of networking groups and great opportunities for sport, socialising and volunteering.

What we're looking for

We’ll expect you to have, or be on course for, a 2:2 or above in any STEM degree discipline. You should also have three A Levels in any subject (excluding General Studies and Extended Projects) plus GCSEs in Maths and English Language, all at grades A* - C. Equivalent international qualifications are welcome.

We recognise that your qualifications and work experience don’t tell us the full story. So we’re keen to find out what you care about and love to do in life. After all, BDO is a place where you should feel free to be yourself. We always look for people who are supportive, responsible, honest and collaborative.
