Aerodynamics

The problem-solving skills are what drove me to consider a career in engineering. Engineering is all about using your skills, knowledge, and experience, and applying them to a wide variety of practical challenges in order to find the best solution as quickly as possible. I knew I wanted to work in Formula One to experience this great challenge in my daily working life. There were two things that attracted me to apply for a position as an Industrial Placement Aerodynamicist: working in a collaborative environment and using the state-of-the-art equipment.

Being a placement student enables you to work with and learn from some of the most experienced and able engineers. You quickly notice how enthusiastic, open and highly driven everyone is within the Team.

As an Industrial Placement student, it is important to apply the foundation of knowledge that you’ve built during your time at university. But just as crucial, you must be a team player! Whatever experience you have or can gain in working with a team, whether that be a sports team or an academic group you are part of, it all helps towards preparing you for a role in the Team. We’re passionate about what we do and enjoy solving every challenge we come up against.

My career with Mercedes started with my Industrial Placement year in the Aerodynamics Department. I spent this time developing our 2014 championship winning car. I was hooked from that point on. I worked hard over my placement year and throughout University and returned to a Graduate Aerodynamicist role. Since then, I’ve worked on various areas of the car and progressed to the role of Aerodynamicist and more recently, Senior Aerodynamicist.
