During the internship, you will be supported and given training (laboratory and office practices, where applicable) until confident to work independently - with a focus on GSK health and safety requirements.  You will be enrolled in GSK internal courses to develop your knowledge of company policy and for your personal development including opportunities to attend seminars led by GSK scientists and networking opportunities.  

Role 1: Mass Spectrometry Imaging Analyst   

The main focus of the MALDI Bioimaging group is to employ state-of-the-art technologies in mass spectrometry imaging to investigate the spatial distribution of drugs and drug related molecules in tissue. 

  • You will work as part of a team to provide critical data to progress the development of new medicines across a range of programmes from different therapeutic areas. 
  • You will have an opportunity to undertake a specific project combining MALDI mass spectrometry imaging and transcriptomics to study the detailed characterisation of endogenous compounds under different stimuli or treatments.
  • You will contribute to the development of this exciting technology and will prepare ex-vivo tissue samples and utilise state-of-the art mass spectrometers for the analysis of these samples.
  • The successful applicant will receive full training in the techniques involved and will investigate the spatial distribution of drug related molecules in tissues. 

Role 2: Global Investigative Safety (Non-clinical safety) 

  • The placement will be positioned within the Global Investigative Safety group within Non-Clinical Safety.  The group are involved in the design and execute bespoke transcriptional and cellular assays to investigate and validate mechanistic hypotheses regarding safety across all phases in the drug development process.
  • Team members have expertise in mitochondrial, lysosomal, gastrointestinal and liver toxicity. 
  • The project will allow the further development of skills in in vitro cell culture, working with cell lines or primary cells.   
  • The project will include using a wide range of techniques typically used within the laboratories, of which you will receive training, including aseptic technique and may include specifically, measuring cytotoxicity using a range of multiparametric plate-reader assays, transcriptomics, bioenergetic assays and high content imaging analysis to explore and identify mechanisms of toxicity.  This will aid current and future projects with decision making regarding the development of compounds. 

Role3: Genetic Toxicology & Photosafety 

There is overwhelming evidence that inherited mutational changes in humans are responsible for genetically determined diseases and congenital (heritable) malformations. Also, the accumulation of somatic cell mutations is known to be implicated in cancer, and to some extent in other multi-factorial diseases. As novel drugs may represent a potential source of damage to DNA, appropriate testing is required to minimise the risk of genotoxicity for both ethical and legislative reasons. The discipline of genetic toxicology as applied to drug development exists to achieve this aim. 

  • Students undertaking a placement in genetic toxicology will perform investigative studies associated with the work of the dept, in the form of a research project. This will consist of literature reviews and establishment of expertise in one or more of the following technologies: flow cytometry, bacterial and mammalian cell/tissue culture, microscopy and image analysis. Following appropriate training, students will be expected to conduct independent research, collate/analyse experimental data, write summaries/reports and a dissertation at the end of year. They will also be expected to present the results of their work at the annual students review and external meetings, if appropriate.
  • In addition, working alongside highly experienced genetic toxicologists, students will develop knowledge of the drug development process, the role of safety assessment and genetic toxicology; be involved in general laboratory management duties throughout the year to gain valuable experience in the daily workings of an industrial genetic toxicology lab to directly support the screening of potential new medicines; develop scientific, IT and other core skills. 

Degree requirements:  

You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree; but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You may be expected to provide evidence from your university to show you will be an undergraduate student for the duration of the placement year and they are supportive of your placement. 

You must be undertaking a Life Sciences degree in a Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology related field. 


  • A salary of £21,000 plus a bonus
