Join the GSK Industrial Placement UK Programme in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Automation, Manufacturing, Electrical and Process Engineering): Help us get ahead of disease together. 

Education required: Undergraduate engineering degree from an accredited university, in a Mechanical, Chemical, Automation, Manufacturing, Electrical or Process related engineering degree.   

Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK university for the duration of your placement.

We have several engineering placements available for talented engineers to support our engineering and manufacturing teams in a world class pharmaceutical factory. Roles may include some, or all the following:  

  • Problem solving and continuous improvement work across a range of pharmaceutical production machinery and processes. 
  • Identifying safety, quality and process performance and efficiency improvements through analysing machine data and audits. 
  • Increasing and maintaining the reliability of our machines. 
  • Providing day to day engineering support. 
  • Assisting in all processes associated with implementing new processes and equipment. 
  • Generating engineering documentation, change controls and production reports. 
  • Taking responsibility for your own projects throughout the year. 
  • Learning more about the varied role of engineering in the pharmaceutical industry.

Please read below about the 3 different locations we are recruiting for across our Engineering Industrial Placements. Please note, these are distinct placements and so when you apply you will be able to select a preference of where you would like to be placed if successful. We will accommodate your preference where possible. 

Global Supply Chain (GSC) Engineering and EHS, GSK House  

The GSC Engineering and EHS group is mainly based in GSK House but can also count on the presence of people in our Global Supply Chain sites.  

The GSC Engineering & EHS Function is comprised of the following groups: Global Capital Projects, Engineering Technical Services, Serialisation- anti counterfeit measures, Environment Health and Safety and Automation. You will be based in Engineering Technical Services in GSK House.

We design standards and policies and provide technical expertise to support and align our GSC network with the intent to deliver more speed and efficiency  

During your time on placement, you will have the opportunity to:  

  • Contribute to the deployment of a Machine Learning application to improve reliability of key manufacturing equipment in the Global Supply Chain Network
  • Contribute to the development and testing of digital twin application Proof of Concept (PoC) to support the manufacturing site engineering activities, such as maintenance
  • Interact with the Global manufacturing network, liaising with industry expert engineers to deploy cutting edge digital application for GSK

To be successful in this role you will need to have a passion for digital innovation and an interest in Machine Learning and/or Building Information Model (BIM) and Revit (Autodesk).  


Ware is the largest GSK manufacturing site in the UK with a thriving early talent community. The Ware Global Supply Chain site manufactures and supplies oral solid dose tablets (for HIV and oncology) and respiratory devices (for asthma and COPD) to over 140 countries, as well as to patients participating in clinical trials, and plays a key role in new product introduction. 

The Ware site is located less than a mile from the station, with regular rail links through to London Liverpool Street, taking around 45 minutes  

There are several opportunities available at Ware site. Successful candidates will be working within our Engineering, Capital Projects and Operational teams putting your university knowledge into practical applications.

This may include supporting cross-site projects, delivering results in complex, multi-disciplinary environments, working closely on our products in our manufacturing areas, identifying process improvements, identifying solutions, and enabling the supply of new and existing products to patients across the world.  


The Worthing site manufactures more than 34 million packs of antibiotics each year, and our 60-year legacy has seen generations of talented people proudly producing our high-quality medicines for patients around the globe.

The Worthing site is situated approximately 2 miles from the South Coast and located at the foot of the picturesque South Downs. We are also only 15 miles from the cosmopolitan and cultural city of Brighton and Hove. Worthing boasts the opportunity to combine city, countryside, and coast all in one location, and even offers rail links to London in under 90 minutes.  

GSK Worthing has opportunities for engineering placement students to work with industry experts in our Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHSS), Continuous Improvement (CI) engineering and Automation teams.  

A placement student in EHSS will have the opportunity to lead continuous improvement initiatives in automation, data management, and developing dashboards for key performance indicators to give visibility of our performance across key business areas.

There is a lot of variety within the role from formulating procedures that operate in line with company and legal standards to working within our committed team to delivering our 2030 sustainability ambition through projects related to energy management, waste reduction and water usage optimisation.   

A placement student in the CI engineering team will have the opportunity to pick up a wide variety of continuous improvement skills that can be applied to numerous positions during your career. During your time on placement, you will get the opportunity to get involved with end-to-end activities from warehousing, manufacturing, packaging, quality all the way to operations engineering. 

You will gain a strong understanding of lean manufacturing (GPS), continuous improvement mindset, and problem solving. You will also lead continuous improvement frameworks working with small functional teams across the site targeting top priority challenges and help train and coach others.  

A placement student in Automation will have the opportunity to engage with a variety of projects and work experience in Cyber Security, Process/Equipment Automation, Digital Data and Analytics. This covers various computerised equipment ranging from Vison systems, PLC/HMI/SCADA, Data Collection/storage systems and Networks.

You will also gain exposure to small project management, validation, fault finding/long-term remediation, business support and compliance activities (cyber security, GMP, Safety).

  • A salary of £22,500, plus a bonus (GSK House - Brentford) or a salary of £21,000, plus a bonus (Barnard Castle or Ware)
