Micro Internships for STEM Undergraduates

Physics, Computer Science, Maths, Chemistry, Biology.

About the role:

Ark Teacher Training are offering termly, 1 week internship opportunities for STEM Undergraduates in Ark Schools in London, Birmingham, Portsmouth and Hastings.

You will be based in one of schools, working within the department associated with your subject expertise. This immersive experience will allow you to gain an insight into both the joys and the mechanics of teaching in a secondary environment. Throughout the week you will be guided by experts and tailored learning resources to build greater awareness of your own skill set, then challenged to develop these skills through focussed activities with students in the classroom. The final day will culminate in leading a short teaching activity with a group of familiar students and receiving feedback on the professional skills you have utilised.

Ark: Why we teach
What inspires teachers? What sparked their interest in teaching? How do they get through the difficult days? And how do they work to get better?

Your placement will support you to build valuable skills in a challenging environment such as: professional characteristics, communication, engaging an audience, reflective practice, self-awareness, resilience, problem solving and planning.

Although not a pre-requisite for applying, should you demonstrate a desire to embark on a teacher training programme, you will be shortlisted for assessment for the PGCE programme delivered through Ark Teacher Training. This is your first step in accessing the Ark’s world-class professional development offer for teachers at every stage of their career.

About Ark:

Ark is a charity that aims to transform children’s lives through education. In the UK, the strongest predictor of how a child will do at school continues to be what their parents do for a living – but why should this be the accepted status quo? By working in our network at one of our 39 schools, you will be directly making a positive impact on young people’s lives through high-quality teaching that sensitively considers all children’s backgrounds and needs; making educational equity a reality.

About You:

You must be able to uphold and role model the values and qualities required of professionals in a school environment.

These include:

  • Respect for all members of the school community
  • Resilience to work in a challenging context
  • Compassion to support the needs of young people
  • Active listening skills, and a reflective approach to learning through experience
  • A commitment to developing your skills and being receptive to feedback
  • High levels of written and verbal communication
  • Punctuality and professional attire
  • An aptitude for teaching

Key requirements:

  • Grade 4 or above in Maths GCSE and English Language GCSE (or equivalent)
  • Studying for an undergraduate degree in a STEM subject

Diversity and Inclusion at Ark

Ark places heavy emphasis on diversity within the recruitment of the professionals and also within the training and education we provide. It’s incredibly important that pupils have a rich and diverse teaching body to learn from; they’re able to see themselves in positions of leadership and authority, while their perceptions and world-views are broadened.
