De Montfort University Engineering Society

As a society, we aim to provide an inclusive environment that allows all students of the university, who are interested in engineering, to expand their network. Like-minded people will be able to more easily share ideas, learn from each other, and collaborate on projects - developing a community that creates numerous opportunities.

Our society helps broaden a student's social and academic development, and with this, members can get help and advice from their peers. In our society, we would discuss topics and create projects that would be in the best interests of everyone involved. Members are also introduced to DMU Racing, the university’s Formula Student Team.

Affiliation

UKSEDS is a unique organisation run entirely by students and young professional volunteers, and part of an international SEDS movement that includes sister organisations in the USA, Canada, India, and many other countries. The society is affiliated with UKSEDS (UK Students for the Development and Exploration of Space).

UKSEDS is the United Kingdom’s national student space society that, for over 30 years, has been supporting students and young professionals across the country by running events, providing resources, and teaching them new skills. Their most famous event is the National Student Space Conference (NSSC), which they first held in 1989.

This year they had people from space agencies such as NASA and JAXA give talks at their conference, which was sponsored by renowned companies like Airbus and Skyrora. They also hold competitions that run in collaboration with leading companies and give students valuable technical and transferable skills.

You can find out more on their website: https://ukseds.org

Projects

Unibots UK

The academic year 2023-2024 is the 3rd year of the society to be running. In the past two years, our members have been participating in the Unibots Competition, winning 2nd Place consecutively and hoping to win 1st Place next year. Unibots UK is an inter-university robotics competition hosted by Cambridge University Robotics, where teams build autonomous robots to accomplish the competition task.

Registration is free for students from universities in the UK. To qualify, teams should use Fusion360 to design their robot and have a moving robot on the competition day. The DMU Engineering Society funds resources needed for competing teams. Members participating get a chance to tour around Cambridge after the competition as well

Joining Unibots UK can provide valuable hands-on experience, skill development, networking opportunities with professionals, participation in competitions, personal growth, and access to resources, all of which can be beneficial for students pursuing careers in robotics and engineering.

Events/Socials

Advanced Engineering UK

Our society, with the support of the Engineering Faculty, had arranged a trip to Advanced Engineering at Birmingham.

This event typically showcased the latest innovations and technologies in various engineering sectors, including aerospace, automotive, medical, and more. It served as a platform for industry professionals, engineers, and businesses to network, explore new products and services, and attend conferences and seminars on cutting-edge developments in engineering and manufacturing.

Bowling Social

One of our memorable socials was the end-of-the-year bowling social. We arranged for 2 games for our members, shuffling teams- to further encourage networking skills. This also helped returning students feel more comfortable when joining again. This academic year, 2023-24, we are planning to have weekly socials.

Formula Student UK

Some of our members have been involved with DMU Racing, the university’s formula student team. Formula Student UK is an annual engineering competition where student teams design, build, and race single-seat race cars to showcase their technical and innovation skills.

The competition occurs at Silverstone with the event running for about a week and having two main parts: the static and dynamic events.

We encourage our members to join as Formula Student offers numerous benefits, including hands-on practical engineering experience, the development of essential teamwork and leadership skills within multidisciplinary teams, exposure to industry professionals and potential job opportunities, improved problem-solving capabilities under pressure, enhanced resumes demonstrating practical skills and commitment, personal growth in terms of confidence and communication skills, and the chance to compete on an international stage, gaining recognition for innovative designs and performance.
