Established in 2015, the UCL Mechanical Engineering Society (MES) stands as a student-led society, boasting a membership of more than 700 UCL Undergraduate and Master's Mechanical Engineering students.
Guided by the principles of integrity, growth, and respect, MES is dedicated to cultivate a strong communal spirit among its members, foster enhanced professional development, and provide the best environment for UCL students to succeed.
The Mechanical Engineering Society is a leading organisation within the UCL Mechanical Engineering department, working closely with academics, staff, alumni, and current students. It consists of 4 Executive Divisions: Marketing, Finance, Sponsorship, and Events.
We aim to reach our main objectives by offering a balance between the following:
MES' social events aim to strengthen the sense of community within the student body. It gives members a chance to take a break, meet students from different years and spend an enjoyable time with classmates.
Our society provides students with an insight into the professional working environment.
The MES orchestrates a diverse array of career-oriented and networking events. This has given students the opportunity to discover a range of potential careers and allowed sponsors to attract students for their early career programs.
These are panel and networking sessions where we invite speakers from many different companies (Rolls Royce, BlackRock, Williams Racing, and more) to present their companies. The students that take part have the opportunity to network with the speakers during dinner.
Annually, we hold numerous industry talks, which consist of graduate mechanical engineers presenting the industry they work in and introducing their company, followed by a Q&A and networking session.
One of the largest events each year is the engineering fair. We provide companies the opportunity to come to UCL and present their relevant internship programs, industrial placements, graduate schemes, types of work, etc. This event attracts more than 200 students every year.
We collaborate with sponsors like Autodesk and Dyson to host annual engineering events and competitions. These inspire students to collaborate, design, and manufacture solutions for different challenges.
In the past two years, our society has hosted a ‘Mechathon’ competition sponsored by Autodesk where 80+ students from the Mechanical Engineering Department participate.
In 2022, students designed and built, in two days, a syringe-operated hydraulic arm to move a load. |

In 2021, students designed and built, in three days, an autonomous vehicle to transport a load across a track. |
In this workshop, students heard from James Dyson Engineers. In teams of six, they then engaged in hands-on build workshops to design sustainable solutions using Dyson products.
