SHU Racing is the home of Sheffield Hallam University’s Formula Student Team.
We are an organisation founded and run by Sheffield Hallam university students who each year design and build a single seat, open wheel, race car. This then competes at the IMechE Formula Student event at Silverstone each summer.
The event consists of both static and dynamic events to test the team and the car. Events include; Endurance, sprint, acceleration, skid-pad, endurance, design, cost and a business presentation.

The team consists of over forty members from a wide variety of academic backgrounds, from foundation to master’s year students. As a team we strongly believe in professional diversification, utilising students with a wide range of perspectives, ideals and educational background This ensures we develop a diverse working environment, in which members can learn and apply teachings to a real world project and gain invaluable experience to prepare them for their future careers.
Each year we strive to push our designs and further innovate to improve our competitive edge in the competition. At our most recent event in 2019, the team successfully competed in every dynamic event, one of only fourteen teams to do so, whilst also reaching the costing final for the first time in the teams nine year history. The culmination of the hard work resulted in our highest ever finish, placing 21st overall.
Unfortunately, there was no competition in 2020. But this has presented us with a unique opportunity to spend an extra year developing our car to ensure the best possible performance. It is also allowing us to integrate more complex ideas and further develop components.
This is also the first year that SHU Racing will begin to develop an electric vehicle to enter the competition. This will allow us to improve the performance of the team as a whole and develop the skills of the team members to work in an always evolving automotive industry.
