UCL Chemical Engineering Ramsay Society

We are the UCL Chemical Engineering department's undergraduate student-led society, managed by nine dedicated committee members.

One of the core values within our society is community. We believe in creating a strong and supportive community, by organising a diverse range of exciting social events as well as educational and insightful career talks throughout the year.

As well as a supportive environment, we are deeply committed to academic excellence. We pride ourselves in supporting each other’s academic and professional growth and we actively collaborate with external companies and industry professionals to offer valuable opportunities for networking, career development, and mentorship for our students.

Our commitment to inclusivity and advancing gender equality has been recognised through the Athena SWAN Award

The department of Chemical Engineering at UCL was founded in 1923, celebrating 100 years of excellence in 2023!
Our society pays tribute to Sir William Ramsay, Professor of Chemistry here at UCL in 1887, most notable for his ground-breaking discovery of the Noble gases.
Arthur Joseph Victor Underwood Umanski, an Honorary Lecturer in the Ramsay Memorial Laboratory of Chemical Engineering at UCL (1932 and 1934), developed the Underwood equations.
Our department has grown significantly, from only 3 students and 2 staff in 1923 to a department comprised of almost 1,000 members.

Career Events

Fresher’s Hackathon

The Annual Fresher’s Hackathon is a highly attended event for incoming Year 1 Chemical Engineering students. During the event, they work in teams of 5 to solve a real-world chemical engineering problem. This Hackathon provides the freshers with a glimpse of UCL Scenarios and prepares them for their future careers as engineers. After two days of preparation with some inspiration from guest speakers, each team presents their ideas and solutions to a panel of departmental academics, who then select the winners.

The theme for this year’s Hackathon will be on how we, as chemical engineers, can improve waste management in the UK. Our objective is to explore the various ways to transition to the UK's ambition of zero avoidable waste by 2050. The goal is to introduce students to pressing global challenges, offer the chance to engage with industry-leading Chemical Engineers, and foster friendships within the cohort.

Annual Ramsay Dinner

The annual Ramsay Society dinner is held in conjunction with the UCL chemical engineering department. Members of the IChemE, alumni from UCL in the industry, staff and students attend this event to celebrate academic achievement from our department. This event is an opportunity for our society members to network with industry professionals.

Industry Trips: Culham Centre for Fusion Energy

Each year, our society aims to organise an industry visit for our students to experience first-hand what a career in engineering could be like. In early 2024, we visited the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, taking over 20 students.

Social Events

Ramsay FC: Students vs Staff match

Our society also has a football team! We often play against other engineering departments at UCL. Last year, our team played against PGTA staff members!

Fresher’s Icebreaker

During Fresher’s week, we host a fresher’s meet up, allowing students to meet their course mates informally before lectures begin! Our icebreaker also gives students the opportunity to ask committee members any questions they may have about university.

Frank Morton’s

This is an inter-university sports day, allowing chemical engineers from across the UK to network with each other over sports!
