Industrial Placement - Software Engineering

IT, Computing, Web Development, Software, AI.

About us

Mirico is an innovative gas sensor company based in Oxfordshire, and is a spinout based on technology originally developed at RALSpace (part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council). We provide state-of-the-art laser technology solutions for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions monitoring over large open areas, enabling organisations to achieve their net-zero climate goals.

We have demonstrated GHG monitoring solutions across the oil & gas, environmental, agricultural, and public utility sectors. Industries and governments are making pledges to reduce GHGs such as methane, and we are seeing demand for monitoring solutions to protect the climate growing rapidly.

Our sensor products generate large volumes of data in real time as they scan the environment for emissions. To mine this data for insights and generate actionable outcomes for our clients, we use a variety of data science solutions which are a key element of our proposition.

Our Digital team is expanding, and we are offering multiple industrial placements to help us create the next generation of software solutions involving the Internet of Things, physics modelling, data visualisation and AI.

We believe in using innovative technology to address climate change and reduce harmful emissions, and in prioritising the safety, health and well-being of our staff. You will be based at our office at the Harwell science campus which has a variety of on-site catering options and is well served by public transport to nearby Oxford and Didcot.

About the role

We are offering placements for 9-12 months, ideally starting July 2024.

The Digital team at Mirico develops the software needed to install, operate and manage our innovative sensor platform. This includes embedded code on the devices themselves, data & analytics platforms running in the cloud, and physics models that are effectively digital twins of the way gas behaves in the real world.

Your role will be to work alongside established analytics & software personnel, helping them implement solutions that turn sensor data into valuable insights such as detection, location and classification of gas leaks from energy infrastructure (e.g. energy production units) and distributed facilities (e.g. landfills). This is an important capability that extracts the maximum value from our technology.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing software using a combination of DevOps, Agile and Lean methods
  • Implementing models in software to ingest real-world sensor data and generate insights
  • Platform engineering to leverage the capabilities of cloud solutions such as Azure
  • Integrating machine learning into solutions to enable them to adapt and improve over time
  • Creating web front end components that display insights and allow customer interaction

About you

You will be a student looking to participate in a Year in Industry placement as part of your degree course. Ideally, you will have completed 3 years of the course and looking to return to university for your final year after the placement.

Primarily, we are interested in the knowledge and skills you have gained in your degree. However, it would be great if you also have experience (for example through university projects, personal study or work placements) of using software engineering and computing to solve real problems.

We are looking for people who are genuinely excited about applying what they’ve learned to a startup environment which is moving rapidly and is at the leading edge of technology. You’ll be able to demonstrate drive and a passion to succeed, be keen to work with (and learn from others) and be comfortable working with multiple software technologies and with extensive numerical data.

What you need for the role

We’re looking for candidates with the following capabilities:

  • Studying for an appropriate technical degree
  • Predicted grade of 2:1 or higher
  • Knowledge of Python (and related languages)
  • Understanding of machine learning techniques
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking ability
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office

In addition, it would be desirable if you had knowledge of:

  • Matlab
  • Environmental or atmospheric science
  • Statistical methods (esp. Bayesian methods)
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Understanding of machine learning techniques

What we offer

At Mirico, we offer a salary of £23,000 plus range of additional benefits including:

  • 25 days' annual leave (pro rata as appropriate)
  • The potential for full-time employment with us when you finish your degree
  • A great team ethos and a purpose-driven company
  • An attractive campus-based working environment
We've signed the Gradcracker feedback pledge.
(This means that we will supply feedback if requested after an interview.)
