Project Title: Experiments in Multiphase Pipe Flow.

About SLB:

We are a global technology company, driving energy innovation for a balanced planet. At SLB we create amazing technology that unlocks access to energy for the benefit of all. That is our purpose. As innovators, that has been our mission for 100 years.

We Are SLB
Across more than 100 years of innovation, we have transformed the energy industry multiple times.

We are facing the world’s greatest balancing act- how to simultaneously reduce emissions and meet the world’s growing energy demands. We’re working on that answer. Every day, a step closer.

Our collective future depends on decarbonising the fossil fuel industry, while innovating a new energy landscape. It’s what drives us. Ensuring progress for people and the planet, on the journey to net zero and beyond. For a balanced planet.

Our purpose: Together, we create amazing technology that unlocks access to energy for the benefit of all.

SLB Cambridge Research (SCR) is part of SLB’s global network of research and engineering centres. SCR is a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art research and computing facilities. We work on applied research projects in the physical sciences to meet the current and future challenges of the industry.

Description & Scope:

One of the major challenges in handling multiphase flow in pipes is that the rates and mechanisms of mass, momentum, and energy transfer can be highly sensitive to the geometric distribution of the constituent phases. Observation of these geometric distributions, or flow patterns, provides a phenomenological description of the flow. However, the available data show little general agreement regarding either the observed flow patterns or, more importantly, the phase transition boundaries between them.

In this project, we focus on the flow of oil-water mixtures and, through experimental observations, aim to determine the phase transition boundary associated with the stratified flow of these two immiscible phases at various pipe inclinations. A better understanding of this boundary is essential for predicting bulk phase separation and assessing corrosion risks, as these are strongly influenced by the amount of free water in contact with the pipe wall.

Responsibilities:

Working within an interdisciplinary team, the successful candidate will support the design and execution of measurements in bespoke flow loops.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Experimental design, planning, and execution, including the development of test matrices and measurement procedures.
  • Identifying key operating parameters, dimensionless groups, and measurement requirements relevant to the fluid mechanics under investigation.
  • Setting up and operating experimental measurement systems, including cameras, illumination, triggering, instrumentation, and data-acquisition systems, as applicable.
  • Conducting experiments and assessing measurement quality, including repeatability, calibration, and sources of experimental uncertainty.
  • Processing, analysing, and interpreting experimental data using MATLAB, Python, or similar scientific computing tools.
  • Applying fundamental fluid mechanics principles to interpret experimental observations and identify trends across operating conditions.
  • Technical communication and documentation, including maintaining experimental records, presenting results, and summarising key findings and recommendations.

Requirements:

  • Studying a Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
  • An academic background in, and interest in, fluid mechanics.
  • Experience with imaging and image processing techniques.
  • Experience with MATLAB and/or Python for data processing and analysis.
  • Experience with mechanical design and CAD software such as Creo, Solidworks, or equivalent.
  • Practical hands-on experience in a laboratory environments highly desirable
