Our internships

Giant Fields
Almost 60% of the world’s oil reserves and resources come from giant oil fields and a small increase in recovery has a significant impact on production and reserves. Watch here to find out about our giant fields and what we are doing to maximise recovery from those fields.

Make an impact on cutting-edge projects. Help find solutions to complex challenges. Be part of a company that invests in you and your growth. You can do it all as an intern at bp.

Our 11-week summer programme gives you the opportunity to build your technical knowledge, develop key skills and learn more about life at bp. You'll be part of one team throughout your internship, supported by a dedicated line manager and buddy. There’ll be opportunities to connect with other interns, take part in training and grow your network across the business.

Role and responsibilities

For this summer intern role, we are looking for someone to work as a geophysicist as part of either a multidisciplinary integrated team or within a specialist team supporting an integrated team.

Geophysics is concerned with the acquisition, processing, analysis, interpretation and integration of seismic and other geophysical datasets, such as gravity-magnetic data, to create an image of and describe the subsurface. Could you be the next geophysicist to join our team?

Here at bp, the combination of geology and geophysics, as geosciences, delivers a powerful description of the subsurface and its uncertainties, growing our ability to safely deliver hydrocarbons and develop lower-carbon energy sources. Join us as a geophysicist and you will find our dedication to today and tomorrow stretches beyond the success of our business to the development of our people and their careers.

The precise nature of your role will be defined by your skills as well as the needs of the business, but your responsibilities will include:

  • Working on projects and supporting your team to find the best solutions.
  • Helping to maintain performance within your team and for bp as a company.
  • Building relationships both within bp and with our external partners, collaborating across functions, segments and teams to deliver excellence.
  • Demonstrating drive and dedication through the bp values, with an emphasis on safety.

As part of bp, you will also be able to take part in additional activities outside of your role, such as supporting local community initiatives or our bp Business Resourcing Groups, and you will be given the encouragement and time to participate.

In addition, demonstrable data science skills would be advantageous for a geoscience candidate applying for a role in bp, such as proficiency in using statistical methods to interrogate large datasets and/or in the application of scripting languages such as Python and development environments such as Jupyter.

We invite applications for internship positions within both our Subsurface and Technology organisations. The Subsurface organisation offers opportunities for geophysicists to collaborate with geologists, reservoir engineers and petrophysicists, supporting bp’s global exploration, appraisal, development and production activities. We especially welcome candidates pursuing an MSc in Petroleum Geoscience or Geophysics, as well as PhD students, to apply for subsurface internships.

Requirements

To apply for this role, you must be on track for a 2:1 in, Geophysics, Earth Sciences, Geology or another closely related geoscience discipline.

  • You must be in your penultimate year of study. Those progressing to a Master's can apply.
  • If you are starting your final year, you would also be eligible to apply for an internship at the end of your studies. This is likely to be most relevant if you are planning to take a year out before starting full-time work.
  • If you are completing a PhD, you must have approximately 9-18 months remaining until your expected PhD completion date.
  • You are also expected to have strong spoken and written English language skills, including business and technical English. Language skills will be assessed throughout the recruitment process.

Please note: We value individuals who take initiative, are committed to excellence, and can adapt positively to change and challenges in a supportive environment.

Start & end dates

Monday 21 June 2027 to Friday 3 September 2027

Please note: Our internships are full-time. If you will struggle to be available for these dates and/or may not be able to work full time, please flag this if you are invited to a technical interview, or earlier if possible.

Other information

Please note the following when applying:

  • You can only apply to one bp early careers opportunity globally per academic year – within this time, we will only process the first application you make. You will be withdrawn from any subsequent applications.
  • We recruit on a rolling basis – this means roles may close once positions are filled or we have enough applications. If you’re interested in a role, we strongly recommend applying as soon as possible while applications remain open.
  • Unless you apply to a role with a location explicitly stated, role locations are not guaranteed – where not stated, you will be placed in a location based on business need.
  • Accommodation – once confirmed, where you need or decide to move closer to your location, you are responsible for organising and funding this accommodation.
  • Hybrid working: bp operates a 60:40 hybrid working policy for most office-based roles, normally requiring three days per week in the office. This may vary for non-office-based roles.

Adjustments

We are keen to make our recruitment process accessible to all. If you require any adjustments/accommodations, to any stage of the recruitment process, please mention this in the allocated section on your initial application form. Someone will then be in touch to discuss or confirm the adjustments/accommodations as appropriate for you.

We are an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of protected characteristics like race, religion, color, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, veteran status or disability status. Individuals with an accessibility need may request an adjustment/accommodation related to bp’s recruiting process (e.g., accessing the job application, completing required assessments, participating in telephone screenings or interviews, etc.).

We've signed the Gradcracker feedback pledge.
