Our internships

Giant Fields
Almost 60% of the world’s oil reserves and resources come from giant oil fields and a small increase in recovery has a significant impact on production and reserves. Watch here to find out about our giant fields and what we are doing to maximise recovery from those fields.

Make an impact on cutting-edge projects. Help find solutions to complex challenges. Be part of a company that invests in you and your growth. You can do it all as an intern at bp.

Our 11-week summer programme gives you the opportunity to build your technical knowledge, develop key skills and learn more about life at bp. You'll be part of one team throughout your internship, supported by a dedicated line manager and buddy. There’ll be opportunities to connect with other interns, take part in training and grow your network across the business.

Role and responsibilities

From exploration to production, our petroleum and reservoir engineers play a crucial role in bp’s field operation success.

Petroleum Engineers are a key link between design, planning and operations of wells, facilities, reservoir, and storage container development. You’ll be adding value through performance optimization through system modelling and developing well intervention requirements to maintain or improve the production of hydrocarbons throughout the life of the field. Depending on your bp location and role, you will gain broad capability, primarily through job experiences, in:

  • Reservoir and Well Performance: for example, participation in the reservoir and well reviews; involvement in production forecasting and optimisation
  • System Optimisation: for example, in well production and facilities optimisation, sand management, artificial lift or geothermal production
  • Well Management: for example in well performance tracking or well operations, real-time surveillance and developing machine learning and data analytics solutions

As a Reservoir Engineer, you’ll focus on integrating geoscience, rock, fluid, pressure, facilities and well engineering data to understand hydrocarbon reservoir and/or storage container performance, plan new field developments and/or optimise the economic recovery of hydrocarbons. Depending on your BP location and role, you will gain broad capability, primarily through job experiences in:

  • Well and/or area Performance: for example, participation in the reservoir and well reviews; involvement in reservoir performance analysis, well planning, or flood management
  • Reservoir management: for example, in setting depletion strategy, generating field development options, or reserves estimation
  • Reservoir simulation: for example, in history matching or model building, developing data analytics solutions

As part of bp, you will also be able to take part in additional activities outside of your role, whether it be supporting local community initiatives, our bp Business Resourcing Groups and you are given the encouragement and time to participate in these.

Requirements

To apply for this role, you must be in your penultimate year of study (those going onto a Master’s and PhD students can apply) and be on track for a 2:1. in Reservoir Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Chemical/Process Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Offshore Engineering, Subsea Engineering, as well as Physics or Chemistry.

You are also expected to have strong spoken and written English language skills, including business and technical English.  Language skills will be assessed throughout the recruitment process.

Please note: We value individuals who take initiative, are committed to excellence, and can adapt positively to change and challenges in a supportive environment.

Start & end dates
