Sam Gordon

Principal Power Systems Consultant

Sam brings over a decade of experience in the energy industry, spanning consulting and academia. He holds a B.Sc. in Electronic Engineering from Westminster University, an M.Sc. in Renewable Energy Systems from Loughborough University, and a Ph.D. in Power Systems Engineering from the University of Strathclyde.

At Blake Clough, Sam has contributed to various power system studies, including Grid Code compliance and system impact assessments. Sam has led the development of a new representative dynamic GB transmission system model as part of a multinational research project exploring the effects of offshore HVDC infrastructure. Additionally, he has been advancing Blake Clough’s in-house full-scale GB transmission system model.

During his time at the University of Strathclyde, Sam completed his Ph.D. and worked as a Research Associate. His research focused on the changing voltage and frequency dynamics in a converter-dominated future GB power system. He contributed to several research projects, including assessing the impact of changing fault levels in the Scottish transmission network and evaluating the performance of low-frequency demand disconnection schemes in GB.

Prior to his academic tenure, Sam served as a Senior Electrical Engineering Consultant at RINA Consulting. There, he supported the development and operation of several gigawatts of renewable energy projects across the UK and internationally. Sam gained significant expertise in utility-scale renewable power generation, energy storage, ancillary service provision, and the network integration of projects.
