A Process Manager with a 27-year career at ExxonMobil has championed the energy company for its global opportunities.

Boasting a résumé packed with variety and invaluable globe-trotting experiences, John McGuffin has seen his work take him from Fife in Scotland to Fawley in Hampshire, followed by experiences in Belgium and Singapore.

John said: “I first joined ExxonMobil Fife as a Technical Engineer and Investment Planner, working on small projects and learning the ropes. The team were incredible from the start, giving me real engineering work and ownership on various projects. They became excellent mentors and helped me grow my confidence quickly.”

Rising through the ranks as Operations Engineer for Utilities and Feed Treatment to Lead Ops Engineer, John praised ExxonMobil’s rapid progression opportunities and strong support network.

Despite initially lacking industrial experience post-university, he soon achieved several supervisory roles, which eventually led to a career changing opportunity with a move to Brussels as an Olefins Optimiser.

“I quickly learnt how to efficiently work alongside a variety of nationalities and made some wonderful friends,” said John. “However, it wasn’t just my career that was blooming. ExxonMobil made sure that my wife, Claire, and I could emigrate without the added stress of a typical international move. They helped us to find a home and supported us with moving costs, meaning my wife could concentrate on finding a rewarding role as a teacher in an international school."

After his stint in Brussels, John moved to ExxonMobil Fawley, located in Hampshire for further career development as Site Coordination Group Supervisor and then Business Team Leader. His role evolved over time, and he eventually returned to Brussels in a senior position, overseeing regional operations and honing his leadership skills. However, John’s travels were far from over.

“One of the most significant phases of my career was our move to Singapore. This three-year assignment was the most challenging yet rewarding, providing an incredible gateway to Asia for my family.”

Following the pandemic, John and his family returned to Fife, where he now leverages his extensive business experience in his role as Process Manager. This move was also a chance for his children to connect with their Scottish heritage.

John said: “ExxonMobil has given me the opportunity to live my life to the full, experience countries I never would have dreamed of seeing, and has given me the support and knowledge to help me thrive in a diverse and fulfilling career.”
