From engineering to business – how one ExxonMobil employee thrived in career path change

A Business Team Leader at ExxonMobil has experienced such diverse career opportunities that she is now thriving in a role significantly different from her original field of training.

After initially joining ExxonMobil with a two-month summer placement at the energy companies’ Fawley Petrochemical Complex in 2013, Chemical Engineering graduate Hannah Simpson has since transitioned from technical engineering to more of a managerial career in Process operations.

Crediting her success to the energy company’s strong support network and continuous learning opportunities, as well as an invaluable stint working in Belgium, Hannah reflects on her eclectic career.

“From the start, ExxonMobil treated me as an individual, not just a number,” said Hannah. “They allowed me to defer my job offer by a year so I could travel and experience the world. Knowing that I had a career waiting for me when I got home was an incredible feeling and helped reduce any anxiety while on my travels.”

Returning to Scotland, Hannah joined ExxonMobil’s Fife Ethylene Plant as a Furnace Contact Engineer, gaining invaluable practical experience, mentorship, and support. “I was immediately allowed to be involved in process decision making and operational tasks, giving me hands on, practical experience building on the theory learned at University,” she said.

During her time at FEP, Hannah’s role evolved to Maintenance Analyst, where she focused on maintenance efficiency and developing the Annual Maintenance Plan. However, it was the opportunity to move to Brussels in Belgium, that changed the trajectory of her career.

Hannah explained: “I worked as an Olefins Regional Business Analyst at the Brussels ExxonMobil European headquarters, focusing on the economics of steam crackers. It was a brilliant time; I met so many people and had significant support from ExxonMobil and my peers as I transitioned into this new role. I was immersed in the commercial side of the business which broadened my understanding and knowledge of how the business makes decisions.”

Following her time in Belgium, Hannah returned to FEP, taking on two short-term roles as Site Improvement Lead and Turnaround Planning Supervisor. These roles further diversified her experience, preparing her for more significant leadership positions.

“I then took on the role of Business Interface Manager, handling interactions with FEP’s key third party stakeholders with a focus on economics and supply chain. With ExxonMobil’s support, I then transitioned to Business Team Leader, overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring product quality, and maximising profit safely and reliably.”

Hannah’s experiences throughout her career have led her to advise aspiring engineers and business professionals to seek work experience early and remain open-minded.

She added: “ExxonMobil offers numerous pathways for career development, and actively encourages their employees to take advantage of the diverse range of roles available. Without their support, I wouldn’t be in the position I am in now, and for that, I’m truly grateful.”
