About the role:

This Graduate Civil Design Engineer will report to the Principal Civil Design Engineer and will work within the UKPN Services directorate based in our London office. You will be a Fixed Term Contract (24 months) employee.

  • You will report to the Principal Civil Design Engineer and will be part of the infrastructure design team. You will work as part of a diverse team, participating in rotations across UK Power Networks Services' (UKPNS) several technical departments to enhance your knowledge.
  • You will join a well-respected company that has been responsible for the development of some of the UK's most recognisable infrastructure schemes. You will work on the most exciting projects and be exposed to multiple industries from public utilities and nuclear to aviation and rail. No two projects, or days, are the same!
  • You will assist the design team in delivering technical excellence across our project portfolio, to keep UKPNS in the top tier for design and build of private assets and help maintain our records on safety, customer service and efficiency.
  • You will be on the graduate training scheme and support from our team of industry leading engineers so that you can achieve your personal and professional goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce civil designs for our clients that meet the relevant standards and align with good engineering practice, with the support from your experienced team members.
  • Carry out both concept/front-end and detailed design work with a focus on value-engineering, energy and carbon savings and innovative solutions. For example, this can include major material and construction method specifications, design calculations, modelling studies and several other tasks across the industry.
  • Assist in the bidding and tendering process that we use to win new projects and attract new clients.
  • Support and contribute to business-wide and team-wide annual targets.

What you'll need:

You will have:

  • Achieved or working towards a BEng, MEng, or MSc level degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • An understanding of the inputs required for analysing steel and reinforced concrete structures. This includes calculations of permanent and imposed loads, wind loads, building's weight load for ground capacity checks.
  • Basic knowledge of the design process of steel and reinforced concrete structures using finite elements resources.
  • Understanding of the use of reinforced concrete, structural steel and masonry work in corrosive industrial environments, fire safety and prevention of contamination are paramount.
  • Spatial and location skill to understand the impact of the civil design decision during the construction and operational stages.
  • Experience working with engineering tools such as AutoCAD, vehicle tracker, structural design software.
  • An interest in working towards achieving professional accreditation such as EngTech, IEng or CEng. Engineering graduates will receive a fully paid for membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
  • Basic awareness of project management and CDM Regulations.
  • You should be able to work simultaneously in a range of projects which are at different stages of development (multi-tasking).
  • You will not know everything, but will need to take responsibility, demonstrate curiosity, and have a drive to deliver high-quality work. You will need to be an effective communicator with people of all different levels and comfortable working in a collaborative manner.
