Discovering life-changing opportunities in Cytiva's undergraduate program

Added: 15th January 2024 by Cytiva

As an engineering student with a keen interest in life sciences, I was beyond excited to join Cytiva's undergraduate program. I discovered the opportunity during my search for placements that would allow me to apply my engineering knowledge while exploring the world of science and innovation.

Throughout my time at Cytiva, I was exposed to a wide range of functions and experiences that contributed to my professional growth. The rotational scheme allowed me to dive into various aspects of the organization, including shadowing a design engineer, prototyping in the engineering lab, and managing a project on my own. These diverse experiences provided me with invaluable insights and have prepared me for the next step in my career after university.

One of my most memorable projects at Cytiva was designing sustainable packaging for a life sciences product. I was able to combine my engineering and CAD design skills, interest in life sciences, and commitment to the environment to make a real, tangible impact on human health.

Under my manager’s guidance, I researched and designed packaging solutions that were both sustainable and aligned with Cytiva's values and mission. I had the autonomy to explore different approaches and make decisions based on my findings. As a result, we successfully created a new packaging design using corrugated cardboard, replacing non-recyclable polyurethane foam. This accomplishment improved both the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of the packaging.

Cytiva’s supportive culture and environment played a major role in my learning journey. I always felt empowered to take ownership of my projects, ask questions, and seek help when needed. My colleagues and manager consistently offered guidance, making sure that I was on the right track while giving me the freedom and autonomy to make decisions and learn from my experiences.

As a woman in engineering, I also appreciated the organization’s diversity. The equal representation of genders in my department was refreshing to see in a field like engineering, where it has historically been male dominated. This inclusive environment undoubtedly contributes to the company's strong sense of community and innovative mindset.

As I return to university for my final two years, I take with me invaluable experiences, skills, and a strong professional network fostered during my time at Cytiva. The undergraduate program has provided me with a solid foundation I can build on, no matter which path I choose to follow in my career.

Inspired by the life-changing work I've seen at Cytiva, I am proud to have worked towards shaping the future of healthcare. I am not fully sure what the future will hold for my career, whether it's pursuing a career in engineering, focusing on renewable energy innovation, or looking to rejoin the biotech world at Cytiva. Whatever I decide, I know that the experiences I’ve had during this program will have a significant impact on my future career path.
