'Behind the scenes' with ABB

We learn from ABB’s graduates that the company offers a lot of support in terms of further study and achieving Chartership. Jackie, ABB’s head of recruitment, emphasises the importance of telling them about your hobbies and any type of work experience in your application. Another wide-ranging and well-attended webinar!

Here’s one of the many kind comments we received…

"Thank you Gradcracker – a great webinar which enables students considering a career with us to know how we work and what our graduates have to say about us. It was a very open and honest exchange of dialogue and our graduates enjoyed participating; it was, for some, the first online webinar they had experienced.

"We welcome this as a future direction of student engagement, as Gradcracker is our trusted partner when we are recruiting graduates." – Jackie McMahon, Head of Talent Management & Talent Acquisition at ABB

Deliver cutting-edge technology

We went behind the scenes with BAE Systems to explore their various teams across air, land and sea.

The graduates we spoke to worked in everything from submarines to applied intelligence, and it was fascinating to hear about the kinds of projects they’ve been involved in. They also offered some of the best advice we’ve heard so far, particularly on virtual application processes.

It stood out to us that BAE Systems is much more than a defence company. It is branching into different business areas – including consultancy and cybersecurity – and consequently offers a diverse range of opportunities for students and graduates…

Go behind-the-scenes with the BBC

The BBC needs STEM students to compete in an ever-growing and technology-based market, and we found out what it was like to work behind the scenes – in software and broadcast engineering, as well as research & development.

We learnt that the BBC isn’t as London-centric as you might think. There’s also a more local, regional level to the organisation, with opportunities to work in Salford, Glasgow, and Belfast too.

With no ideal candidate, the organisation encourages its people to be themselves. It is looking for people who can guide the BBC into the future with new ideas and fresh ways of doing things.  And if you’re not sure if the BBC is for you, we suggest you give this webinar a watch…

(Due to technical issues, India, one of the graduates, isn’t visible in the recording, but luckily we were still able to hear about her experiences.)

Here’s one of the many kind comments we received…

"Just a quick note to say that it was great!  It was so good to hear more about the graduates' personal experiences – they all had lots of interesting and engaging things to say! Develop the next generation of physicists and engineers

An important message that came out of the webinar is that you don’t need a physics degree to teach physics. It’s a path open to graduates from all STEM disciplines, and if you choose to pursue it, you’ll be in high demand.

We spoke to some of the trainee teachers from the Institute of Physics. It was fascinating to hear their reasons for choosing the profession and what skills they use on a day-to-day basis. We also discussed the fact that, as a teacher, you must wear many different hats – teaching, supporting and inspiring…

Help keep water flowing

An insightful conversation covering all aspects of a student or graduate’s journey at Severn Trent – from the application process, right through to gaining Chartership in the water industry.

We were impressed by the balance between structured and self-directed training, and the opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience through things like operational rigs and virtual reality.

We also asked graduates why they chose a career at Severn Trent; their reasons included the company’s commitment to the environment, and the fact that there will always be a demand for water. Watch this webinar to find out how you can develop specialist skills in a vital industry.

Here’s one of the many kind comments we received…
