I completed an MEng in Chemical Engineering, which gave me a strong foundation in chemical and process engineering principles. While thinking about my next steps after university, I realised I was most interested in engineering roles that combine technical problem-solving with the challenges of working in highly regulated and safety-critical industries.
Babcock stood out to me because of its strong reputation for delivering critical engineering services and the variety of projects available across the business. The Chemical and Process Engineering Graduate Programme offered the opportunity to build on my academic knowledge, contribute to multidisciplinary projects, and learn from experienced engineers while following a structured development pathway. This combination made it an ideal place to start my career and continue developing as an engineer.
It’s the variety of work and the opportunity to contribute to real engineering projects from an early stage. As a Chemical and Process Engineering Graduate, I have the opportunity to rotate across various teams and see how everyone contributes to the design process.
I also really value the exposure to experienced engineers and the opportunity to learn from their expertise. The supportive environment makes it easy to ask questions, and the structured nature of the programme ensures a good balance between technical development and professional skills.
Throughout my time at Babcock, I have had opportunities to take ownership of my own projects and activities. As my experience has grown, I have been trusted with increasing levels of responsibility across a range of business-critical work.
One project involved reviewing the environmental implications of chemicals used within reactor maintenance processes. I was responsible for assessing whether our existing treatment and disposal arrangements were sufficient, working with stakeholders including Plant Management and the Environment Agency, and delivering a report within the required timeframe. It was rewarding to know that my work led to improvements that strengthened compliance.
I have also overseen the installation of critical pipework supporting maintenance activities. After receiving the necessary training and authorisation, I was trusted to set personnel to work and manage these activities safely, coordinating across multiple teams and maintaining accountability for progress. Seeing a project develop from a drawing into a completed installation was particularly satisfying.
Another highlight was producing a business case for new test equipment. This involved gathering stakeholder requirements, developing the financial justification and presenting the proposal for approval. The proposal was successful, securing funding for equipment that will support future commissioning activities.
The most rewarding part has been seeing projects progress and knowing that the work I have delivered continues to be used after I have completed it. Having the opportunity to take ownership of meaningful pieces of work has helped me develop both technically and professionally, while building confidence in my ability to take on greater responsibility.
One thing I’ve really appreciated about working at Babcock is the emphasis placed on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. As a graduate, having that support while settling into a professional role has made a big difference.
The flexible working arrangements make it much easier to balance work with commitments outside of work, and I’ve found the culture within my team to be very supportive. My managers encourage open communication and help ensure workloads are realistic, so there’s a focus on delivering high-quality work without feeling overwhelmed.
I’ve always felt comfortable discussing priorities and asking for support when needed, which has been particularly valuable while I’m still developing my skills and confidence as an engineer. There is also a genuine recognition that wellbeing matters, and the positive working environment and wellbeing resources available have helped make my experience both enjoyable and rewarding.
I’ve felt well supported in my professional development since joining Babcock. Having a clear development plan from the start has helped me see how I’m progressing, and having a mentor to turn to for advice and guidance has made a big difference. As I work towards professional registration, it’s reassuring to know that support is always there when I need it.
There are also lots of opportunities to continue developing, including working towards chartership. What I’ve found most valuable is being able to put my learning into practice on real projects. It’s been rewarding to see my skills and confidence grow as I’ve taken on new challenges and responsibilities.
