Goal7's client engaged the Goal7 team to assist in the review and screening of carbon dioxide shipping solutions to understand the full CCS value chain and the market as a whole.
Goal7 assessed the full CO₂ shipping market and the key players involved. Criteria was developed to assess the areas key to understanding the market, which included:
Goal7 delivered an in-depth assessment of the CO2 shipping market with the benefit of providing the client with a comprehensive understanding of the full shipping value chain and provided valuable insights into the key players involved in the process. It also provided the client with a deeper understanding of the different conditions involved with shipping CO2 and the associated levelised costs. The output of this assessment provided the client with a better understanding of CO2 shipping, allowing them to progress with developing into the CCS market.
Goal7's client needed to establish their New Energy Business Strategy and wanted the expertise of Goal7's diverse team to accelerate developing and implementing a new energy strategy aligned with their overall business goals and objectives.
To inform Goal7's client, we performed molecule to market and full value chain analyses tailored to their UK, European & North African assets on various new energy markets inclusive of hydrogen, CCUS, electrification and geothermal. Using this informative sessions were held with their executive team to ensure a common base level of understanding. With Goal7's technical engineering knowledge coupled with their financial, economic and full life cycle project management skills they worked with the client to create their first new energy strategy.
With each of the clients assets and in consideration of their overall business.
The client's New Energy Strategy implementation with Goal7's multi disciplined support has led to a number of projects being approved by their board for further investment and development.
Continuing to support Goal7's client, an established logistics and waste management company, on their journey to achieve net zero by 2040.
Carbon Conscience Service is an ongoing service Goal7 provide to one of their clients for support on a variety of sustainability and emissions reduction-related subjects.
This service includes responding to a wide variety of requests from the client, including input and guidance in forming emissions reduction strategies, analysing emissions, water, and waste over time to provide visualisation to communicate this to key stakeholders, and contributing to data collection improvements such as software integration and calculation methodology support.
Preparation of requirements for various emissions reporting standards such as CDP and TCFD has underpinned quality emissions reporting, and Goal7 have supported the client with their investigation into PAS 2060 accreditation for the UK.
Goal7 also advise on the coordination of, provide technical input for, and draft applications for funding opportunities to enable them to drive projects forward as they look to a low-carbon future.
Continued support on the client's next chapter of their net-zero journey, ensuring they set ambitious but achievable targets.
A Canadian Private Equity company was exploring the opportunity to establish a new energy transition-focused Newco by acquiring a package of downstream and retail assets being marketed for sale in the United States and Canada. The assets included ethanol plants, bio-refineries and retail fuelling stations.
A three-part assessment strategy was identified involving biofuels, CCUS, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure at retail outlets.
Goal7 reviewed each asset, assessing potential options and infrastructure access and putting together a build-out strategy reflecting market developments and national/local policies. The key technology areas explored were co-location of CCS, renewable H2, bio-diesel and bio-ethanol.
Review included:
The project succeeded in creating an in-depth report on the energy transition opportunities for each of the identified assets. The report included three business cases:
Goal7 was approached by multiple new and existing clients for the scoping, drafting and/or review of, non-competing, applications into the North Sea Transition Authority's (NSTA) first ever UK carbon dioxide appraisal and storage licensing round.
The NSTA launched the round in response to unprecedented levels of interest from companies eager to enter the market with the areas on offer having a combination of attributes such as the right geological conditions, proximity to existing infrastructure which may be able to be re-purposed, and links to industrial clusters which are looking to carbon storage to help meet their decarbonisation goals.
Goal7 brought its expertise from previous out-of-round applications and BEIS Cluster Sequencing to produce successful applications in different regions, with different geologies and with different envisioned value chains.
A collaborative approach was kicked off by Goal7 by running an initial screening exercise of potential offshore geological CO2 storage sites by region of the UKCS from both public domain and client based data. Our resource allowed for a more thorough and wider screening to take place and identified targets by a methodical ranking. This resulted in the submission of nominations to the NSTA which unlocked the sites for application in the licensing round.
Upon announcement of the round Goal7 analysed the guidance documentation and scoring methodology to identify the key focus areas of the applications which included; geotechnical database and evaluation already performed; subsurface risk and hazard assessment; above-ground evaluation and project planning; and work programme. Goal7 took on a development and support role in addition to the development of key messages and drafting in specific sections. A significant focus of the above-ground evaluation was the full value chain assessment, economics and project risk assessment. Support continued in the form of self-assessment and preparation of materials for client internal approvals. This included the process of NSTA interview post-submission and project preparation once award was imminent.
