King's Cross Central Development

King's Cross Central Limited Partnership is delivering a vibrant new part of London, on previously underused industrial wasteland. It is the largest mixed use redevelopment in single ownership to be developed in central London for over 150 years. The 67 acre masterplan, designed by development partner Argent, builds on the areas strengths and rich cultural past.

When complete, the King's Cross Development will feature 10 new squares, 20 new streets and 50 new and refurbished buildings, including homes, retail and office spaces, entertainment and education facilities. It will provide almost 2,000 new homes and benefit 45,000 people who will directly use the area. This new London postcode; N1C is building on the area’s diverse and dynamic community next to London’s best connected transport hubs.

Ramboll’s work at King's Cross

Ramboll has worked on no less than 15 sites at King's Cross. The first in 2009, with the now completed award winning Plimsoll Building (P1). The 12 storey building sits alongside the canal and a beautiful communal urban park. The development has 255 stunning apartments, a shared landscape podium garden with an additional rooftop winter garden, all located over a school for hearing-impaired children, primary and pre-school, and other community facilities.

Ramboll has also played pivotal roles on plots: S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, T1, T2-T4, T6, R3, R5, R6, W-Zone, Filling Station and the district heating energy centre; providing district heating and cooling across the development. Our engineers and consultants have delivered and continue to deliver a range of services across the site, including structural and civil engineering, asset protection and ground borne acoustics. Locally we have also refurbished King's Cross landmarks including: Great Northern Hotel and The Lighthouse Building.

Queensferry Crossing

The Queensferry Crossing is one of the most striking engineering icons of the twenty-first century. It is the UK’s tallest bridge and the world’s longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge. Linking Edinburgh with the county of Fife it stands proud alongside its illustrious neighbours, the world famous Forth Bridge and Forth Road Bridge.

Ramboll is proud to have led the Design Joint Venture (DJV), which includes Sweco and Leonhardt Andra and Partners. The DJV worked for main construction contractors Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors (FCBC), a consortium of Hochtief, Dragados, American Bridge International and Morrison Construction, helping deliver the crossing and surrounding road approaches.

Peter Curran, DJV and Ramboll Project Director for Queensferry Crossing commented “Working on a project of this scale and importance is a real privilege. We have been working on the Queensferry Crossing since 2009 and it has been both a challenging and rewarding experience. We have worked hard in pushing the boundaries of innovation in order to develop a competitive tender design and have subsequently continued our endeavours during the construction process in close collaboration with the Contractors and Clients teams in order to optimise its delivery. It really is awe-inspiring to look out onto the Firth of Forth and see the contribution we have made to such an amazing bridgescape”.

The project to design and construct the bridge has been recognised within the industry for its innovation and efficient delivery. Already the project has collected the following major awards.

Thameslink: Bermondsey Dive Under

Rebuilding a vital section of the Thameslink rail line at Bermondsey Dive Under in London included track and infrastructure work to increase traffic, with sustainability and urban regeneration aspects. Value engineering and detailed design by Ramboll, in collaboration with main contractor, Skanska, and Network Rail, delivered significant cost benefits.

Bermondsey Dive Under comprises a new section of railway track and infrastructure that allows Thameslink lines to cross Kent lines unimpeded. It forms part of the £6 billion Thameslink Programme and seeks to untangle the tracks approaching London Bridge Station.

Ramboll and Skanska were appointed to undertake the outline design, detailed design and implementation of the strengthening works to existing structures and to design the Bermondsey Dive Under. The new structures include earth embankments, reinforced earth, pre-cast arch viaducts, steel composite bridge structures, concrete box structures and reinforced concrete integral bridges.

Within the Structural Strengthening part of the project a total of 52 structures were identified and 21 were strengthened.

Walthamstow Wetlands: Europe’s largest urban wetland nature reserve

A 520-acre complex of ten operational reservoirs in north-east London, Walthamstow Wetlands is Europe’s largest urban wetland nature reserve while also supplying around 3.5 million households in and around the capital with water.

In 2017 the reserve officially opened, bringing much greater visibility to the 150-year old site, with improved visitor facilities and free entry to the wider public in an area of London that has historically been deprived and underdeveloped.

Ramboll was employed by the London Borough of Waltham Forest to provide environmental, hydrological, engineering and geotechnical services for the development of the reserve’s new reed beds. We prepared a hydrological and geotechnical design together with a dredging specification to make way for the new wetland area whilst allowing for the continuous supply of London’s potable water.

We reviewed specialist ecological survey data, prepared a draft design of reed bed planting plots (including reed stock, species mix and plant specifications) and prepared biosecurity notes to evaluate the presence of invasive species on or around the site during the reed bed creation works.

We also supported the client with the completion of the final design for tender, prepared ecological specifications for the contractor’s tendering for the project and provided a client’s representative for the construction process.
