The Ridge, Cape Town (South Africa)

A landmark in green design

Setting new standards for eco-conscious development in Cape Town

  • Mace oversaw the delivery of Deloitte’s Cape Town head office at The Ridge, an 8,500m² commercial development in the V&A Waterfront
  • Achieved a 6-star Green Star Design rating and won a Gold WAN Award for Best Sustainable Building
  • Integrated advanced sustainable technologies including TABS cooling, natural ventilation, and a timber façade.

Mace was appointed by V&A Waterfront Holdings to provide project management for The Ridge – a pioneering sustainable commercial development in Cape Town’s iconic waterfront district.

Designed to serve as Deloitte’s Cape Town head office, the 8,500m² building sets a new standard for sustainable design and workplace innovation.

The Ridge comprises four levels of office space arranged around a central atrium ‘street’, fostering collaboration and natural light throughout. Two basement levels, shared with the adjacent Merchant House, provide 215 parking bays and are naturally ventilated – a key feature in the building’s sustainability strategy.

The project achieved a 6-star Green Star Design rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa and won a Gold WAN Award for Best Sustainable Building.

Its standout features include a zigzag timber façade, Thermally Activated Building System (TABS) cooling, and natural ventilation for up to 80% of the year – all contributing to occupant comfort and reduced environmental impact.

Working closely with Studio MAS, Arup, and Paragon Interface, Mace ensured seamless coordination and delivery of this world-class development. The Ridge exemplifies Mace’s commitment to delivering high-performance, eco-conscious buildings that enhance wellbeing and set global benchmarks for sustainable commercial design.

Caerphilly Castle, South Wales

Preserving a Welsh landmark for future generations

Heritage-led regeneration of Caerphilly Castle, a Grade I listed landmark

  • Delivered complex conservation works while keeping the castle fully open to the public.
  • Enhanced accessibility across a complex medieval site.
  • Blended heritage and innovation through immersive storytelling, tactile displays, and modern infrastructure.

Caerphilly Castle, one of Wales’ most outstanding national landmarks, has stood for over 750 years as a defining feature of the local landscape. Originally constructed in 1268 during the Anglo-Norman expansion, the fortress is now recognised as a Grade I listed site and a vital part of Wales’ historic environment. As part of Cadw’s long-term vision to revitalise Wales’ historic landmarks, Mace was appointed to lead the regeneration of this Grade I listed site, providing project management and cost consultancy services from the early design stages.

The five-year programme has delivered a wide range of conservation and enhancement works, carefully balancing historical integrity with modern visitor needs. Key interventions included structural repairs to the Watergate and Great Hall roof, installation of underfloor heating and new flooring for events, and improved accessibility through new ramps and bridges.

Interpretation works have brought the castle’s story to life through immersive audiovisual installations, bespoke graphics, and tactile fitout elements. The creation of a biodiverse wildflower garden and upgraded visitor amenities further enrich the experience.

Throughout the project, Caerphilly Castle remained open to the public, requiring Mace’s multidisciplinary team to navigate the complexities of working in a live heritage environment. This demanded seamless coordination between stakeholders, contractors, and conservation experts to ensure safety, minimise disruption, and maintain a high-quality visitor experience.

The result is a revitalised Caerphilly Castle, ready to inspire, educate, and welcome visitors for generations to come.

Hanoi Opera House, Vietnam

A pearl of innovation

Hanoi’s ‘floating’ opera house: an artistic landmark for cultural exchange

Isola Della Musica, an opera house and cultural landmark, is set to rise from the tranquil waters of Hanoi’s West Lake in 2027. With a 1,800-seat opera hall and a 1,000-seat convention venue, Isola Della Musica is poised to become a premier destination for international productions, cultural exchange, and creative innovation.

Anchored between West Lake and Đam Tri Lake, the structure will transform 13,347 square metres of existing land, creating a seamless connection between the two bodies of water. The ‘floating’ opera house was designed by internationally acclaimed architect Renzo Piano, to resemble the organic form of a mother-of-pearl. Its ribbed concrete shell will feature shimmering ceramic tiles, echoing the legendary freshwater oysters of West Lake.

London Legacy Development Corporation

Delivering London’s Olympic promise

Inspiring a generation and creating a lasting legacy for London

  • Delivered an economic powerhouse, with £2.8bn generated in value to the local and national economy thanks to the Olympic and Paralympic 2012 games.
  • Sparked regeneration for the region, tackling the capital’s housing shortage by overseeing the creation of 10,000 homes and creating a new postcode; E20.
  • Designed a multi-functional stadium, innovative seating at the London Stadium allows for concerts, world-class athletics, rugby and football all to be hosted in one place.

Mace is proud to have been one of the few companies that has worked on the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games from the capital's bid, right through to transforming the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and regenerating the east of London to create a lasting legacy.

Together with our client, the London Legacy Development Corporation, we are managing the creation of a new and vibrant community with 10,000 new homes in the east of London. We have overseen the creation of new roads, footpaths and cycle routes to connect the park to the heart of the local community. The amount of parkland has been doubled to create the city's newest public park while converting the Games venues into world class community leisure facilities, which can also hold international sporting fixtures.

Of course, the pinnacle at the centre of the vast site is the London Stadium itself. Project managed by Mace, the 80,000 capacity stadium has been transformed ahead of schedule, with the upper tier of seating removed and the lower tier seating replaced with a new movable tier that can accommodate both football and athletics. This has created a multi-purpose arena for athletics, concerts and a new home for West Ham United Football Club.

Landmark 81, Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam)

Reaching for the skies in Ho Chi Minh City

Delivering Vietnam’s tallest building located on River Saigon

  • Features high-end residential units, a luxury hotel, and premium office spaces.
  • Facilitated Vietnam's largest concrete pour this included installing 6,500 tonnes of steel and pouring 8.4m deep pile foundation.
  • By separating the tower’s pile cap excavation from the podium basement, allowed us to cast the concrete cap earlier, cutting the programme by three months.

The record setting 'Landmark 81' stands at 150m taller than The Shard in London, dominating the city landscape in Vietnam. It is the centrepiece of Vinhomes Central Park, towering over the other 17 skyscrapers within the multi-functional ecological development.

Landmark 81's design reflects our client’s vision of a luxury development set over 81 storeys. The mixed-use tower includes high-end apartments, a hotel, executive floors and 360 degree observatory decks.

To construct the tower’s pile cap on which the foundations sit, our construction management experts planned, set up and managed the delivery of the largest continuous concrete pour ever seen in Vietnam. This involved excavating 25,000 cubic metres of soil, installing 6,500 tonnes of reinforced steel, and using 17,000 cubic metres of concrete to create the 8.5 metre thick pile cap for the tower’s foundations. This engineering feat required detailed logistical planning, including the construction of temporary roads and walkways, staircases and specially designed cooling systems.
