Overview

Nuclear science to benefit society - Established in 2008, the United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL) is the government’s lead civil nuclear fission laboratory whose mission is: to enable and deliver nuclear outcomes for government, and to support growth of the UK nuclear sector.

Our workforce represents a combined 10,000 years of expertise in nuclear science and technology and we’re continuing to grow. We don’t take a profit. Instead, we call the money we make Earnings to Reinvest. It all goes back into the business to develop science, innovation technology and our people.

History of NNL
A look at the long, rich history of the National Nuclear Laboratory.

We operate the world’s most advanced nuclear facilities across the UK. Our state of the art laboratories support our people in pushing the boundaries of nuclear science and innovation.

Safety is our number one priority. We make this clear through our values and behaviours and our policies and training.

At UKNNL we have four strategic focus areas;

  • Clean Energy - We are helping the UK reach its climate goals by looking at new ways to develop and deploy advanced nuclear technologies.
  • Environmental Restoration - We’re working to ensure our impact on the environment is minimal and we’re finding innovative ways to treat and dispose of waste.
  • Health and Nuclear Medicine - We’re advancing research in nuclear medicine to help develop the way conditions are diagnosed and treated.
  • Security and Safeguards - We provide expert guidance on the safe handling and storage of nuclear materials to organisations across the globe.

Our innovative approach means our people embrace the opportunity to make new scientific discoveries, using them to create market-ready products and services that drive the nuclear industry forward in performance, safety and impact. We work with partners and clients to not only understand what they need, but to also explore the limits of what is possible.

We have sites in Cumbria, Preston, Warrington, Culham and Stonehouse.
