What do we do?

Caterpillar Inc. is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives. Since 1925, we’ve been driving sustainable progress and helping customers build a better world through innovative products and services. Throughout the product life cycle, we offer services built on cutting-edge technology and decades of product expertise. These products and services, backed by our global dealer network, provide exceptional value to help our customers succeed.

We have a clear vision to be the global leader in providing customer value in the markets in which we operate. Our core values (Safety, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, Commitment and Sustainability) are key to our success.

At our Peterborough Campus we have a 500-person engineering team who design, develop, test and manufacture powertrain solutions for Caterpillar and third-party customers. Our world-class test facilities and partnerships with leading universities allow us to develop new technologies and support our global manufacturing sites. We have an ever-growing focus on next generation powertrain solutions, helping our customers progress towards Carbon Net Zero. We harness the power of data science and advanced simulation techniques, alongside traditional engineering disciplines, to create sustainable digital services and solutions that will power our customers’ future.

What experiences can we offer you?

Our two-year GTS graduate development scheme offers a varied and highly visible introduction to portfolio management, business operations and project delivery. From day one, you will work with teams across the organisation, turn complex information into clear insights and help shape decisions on strategically important projects. Rotations typically last 6–12 months, giving you the opportunity to explore different areas of GTS, build a broad internal network and develop a valuable combination of commercial, analytical and leadership skills. Depending on business priorities, your experience could include:

  • Helping manage a diverse portfolio of projects, from initial ideas and business cases through delivery, benefits tracking and closure.
  • Coordinating project plans, milestones, risks, issues and dependencies to create a clear view of portfolio performance.
  • Supporting project intake, governance, prioritisation and review activities that enable informed leadership decisions.
  • Creating engaging dashboards, reports and presentations that turn portfolio data into meaningful business insight.
  • Working with project leads and Finance to monitor budgets, forecasts, resources and expected benefits.
  • Maintaining portfolio roadmaps and supporting resource and capacity planning across competing priorities.
  • Identifying trends, constraints, cross-project dependencies and emerging risks, and helping teams develop practical responses.
  • Facilitating workshops and review meetings, coordinating actions and building relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Supporting change control, project assurance and continuous improvement across portfolio processes, tools and standards.
  • Taking ownership of improvement projects that enhance visibility, simplify ways of working or strengthen business performance across GTS.

Based within GTS, you could collaborate with colleagues across Operations, Quality, Engineering, Product Development, Product Management, Logistics, Finance and Purchasing, as well as suppliers and customers. This breadth of exposure will give you a unique view of how projects, people, technology, financials and business priorities connect across a global organisation. No two rotations will be exactly the same: you may move from analysing portfolio performance and preparing a leadership review to facilitating a workshop or supporting the launch of a new initiative.

Throughout the scheme, you will be encouraged to take ownership, contribute ideas and lead meaningful pieces of work with the right balance of support and independence. Alongside structured training and mentoring, you will gain practical experience of influencing stakeholders, solving business problems and communicating with senior leaders. Within a short period of time, you will become a trusted member of the team and see the impact of your work.

What happens after the graduate scheme?

On successful completion of the scheme, you will be well placed to progress into a role in portfolio or project management, business operations, planning, analytics or continuous improvement. With experience across multiple teams, a strong internal network and ongoing career support, you will have the foundations to build a varied and rewarding career within Caterpillar’s global organisation.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for curious, adaptable and proactive people who enjoy bringing structure to complex challenges and working with others to make things happen. You do not need to arrive with extensive portfolio experience; what matters is your willingness to learn, ask thoughtful questions and take ownership. You will be comfortable working with data, able to communicate clearly with different audiences and motivated by the opportunity to support a wide variety of projects. Strong organisation, sound judgement, teamwork and an interest in business, engineering or technology will help you thrive. In return, you will receive training, mentoring, meaningful responsibility and the opportunity to shape a career that plays to your strengths.
