What do we do?

Caterpillar Inc. is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives. Since 1925, we’ve been driving sustainable progress and helping customers build a better world through innovative products and services. Throughout the product life cycle, we offer services built on cutting-edge technology and decades of product expertise. These products and services, backed by our global dealer network, provide exceptional value to help our customers succeed.

We have a clear vision to be the global leader in providing customer value in the markets in which we operate. Our core values (Safety, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, Commitment and Sustainability) are key to our success.

At our Peterborough Campus we have a 500-person engineering team who design, develop, test and manufacture powertrain solutions for Caterpillar and third-party customers. Our world-class test facilities and partnerships with leading universities allow us to develop new technologies and support our global manufacturing sites. We have an ever-growing focus on next generation powertrain solutions, helping our customers progress towards Carbon Net Zero. We harness the power of data science and advanced simulation techniques, alongside traditional engineering disciplines, to create sustainable digital services and solutions that will power our customers’ future.

What experiences can we offer you?

Our two-year GTS graduate development scheme offers hands-on experience in Manufacturing Systems Engineering, combining digital manufacturing technology, production support and project delivery. Rotations typically last 6-12 months and will allow you to build an understanding of how integrated systems, manufacturing data and shop-floor processes work together to support safe, efficient and high-quality engine production. Depending on business priorities, your experience could include:

  • Supporting the development, deployment and improvement of manufacturing systems used to plan, control and execute production.
  • Working with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and connected shop-floor applications.
  • Supporting Enterprise Bill of Process (EBoP) and digital manufacturing process-planning activities, including routings, operations and electronic work instructions.
  • Helping maintain the accuracy, quality and traceability of product, process and production data across integrated systems.
  • Analysing manufacturing-system issues, identifying root causes and coordinating practical resolutions with Engineering, Operations, Quality and IT teams.
  • Supporting system changes, upgrades, testing, user acceptance and controlled deployment into production environments.
  • Contributing to integration between engineering, planning and shop-floor systems, including interfaces with machines, PLCs, middleware and data platforms.
  • Using data, dashboards and analytics to monitor system performance, production readiness, quality and operational effectiveness.
  • Participating in digital transformation projects involving automation, connected manufacturing, simulation, digital twins, advanced analytics and artificial intelligence.
  • Developing business cases, requirements, project plans, risk assessments, training material and standard work for manufacturing-system improvements.

Based within GTS, you could collaborate with colleagues across Operations, Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Development, Logistics, Finance, Purchasing and Information Technology, as well as suppliers and technology partners. This breadth of exposure will help you understand how manufacturing processes, people, data and enterprise systems connect across a global organisation.

Throughout the scheme, you will be encouraged to take ownership, contribute ideas and lead meaningful pieces of work with the right balance of support and independence. Alongside structured training and mentoring, you will develop practical experience in problem-solving, stakeholder engagement, systems thinking, project delivery and communicating technical information clearly. Within a short period of time, you will become an embedded member of the Manufacturing Systems Engineering team and see the impact of your work in production.

What happens after the graduate scheme?

On successful completion of the scheme, you will be well placed to progress into a role in portfolio or project management, business operations, planning, analytics or continuous improvement. With experience across multiple teams, a strong internal network and ongoing career support, you will have the foundations to build a varied and rewarding career within Caterpillar’s global organisation.
