What’s your role at Bank of America?

I work in Equity Capital Markets and liaise between the public and private sides of finance. Companies come to us with their private financial needs and when they want to raise capital or sell existing shares, we help them sell to institutional investors. It involves knowing a lot about corporations, investors and the market – and how they operate together.

What made you want to join?

Before I applied, I had a friend who worked here who really felt supported and that he'd been given a lot of opportunities. What better recommendation is there!

How are you supported to learn and grow?

From my very first interview, people have made me feel comfortable and I could be myself. There’s a culture of support here that protects your personal time and interests. I feel that people really care about me.

Also, when you join the bank, you’re assigned a buddy and a mentor who help you to build connections. And there’s your manager and your development officer, who can help you grow. My manager regularly asks about my ambitions – whether for the next 12 months or the next three years. People are invested in you here, and the industry is so dynamic and challenging that there’s always more to learn.

Tell us about your typical day

I always start by reading the news for the latest market developments and any new company reporting or macro-economic data. I want to get an idea of events that might affect the market, especially if I have a deal launching soon.

Then, I’d usually have a catch-up with my team before prepping for a client meeting. For this, I’d work with my seniors to discuss our presentation outline, and liaise with the industry team and the country team in investment banking to ensure our views are aligned. The great thing is, they all value my input.

What about opportunities to move beyond your current role?

Bank of America has a very good internal mobility programme and a lot of the people I know have moved to work in the US, Australia or Hong Kong, for example. That said, mobility doesn’t have to mean moving countries. It can also mean joining a different team, or even taking on a new product or industry within your current team.

In what ways do you see the bank as an industry leader?

Our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) research team has been just ranked number one in Europe, which shows the bank's determination to be a recognised leader in sustainable finance. In my team, we present ESG ideas and strategies to our clients when we offer our products and services to them. They’re also keen to be more involved in the world of sustainable finance.
