Nathan Preston

Graduate Software Developer for Customer Management Systems in Microelectronics

Why did you choose to work at STFC?

I originally started at STFC as a web developer for my placement year. I chose to work here as it seemed like a great learning experience, as I’d be able to develop my web development skills to a professional standard. After finishing my degree, this year, I returned to my department within STFC on the graduate scheme.

What are your responsibilities?

My role now entails both front-end and back-end web development. I primarily focus on any major web design changes and how to further improve user experience. Currently, for the back-end, I am learning how to use AWS.

What is the best thing about being based at your location?

The best thing about the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is the sheer size of it, and therefore the massive variety of work that goes on here. It’s always interesting to talk to other members of staff to hear what large projects they’re working on.

What makes STFC a great place to work?

I think STFC is a great place to work, as my learning and development is very valued here. Senior members of staff don’t expect you to know everything about your field, which really helps bridge the gap between university and full time employment.

What training have you received so far?

I am currently planning to go on RedHat training, to gain certification. I am then planning to move onto AWS training and certification.

How has your career progressed at STFC?

I’ve further progressed my career by integrating with existing teams and developing my communication skills, which allows me to work better as a team.
