Application Tips

Whether you apply for a trainee/graduate scheme or a placement, you will follow a structured application process. Depending on the scheme that you are applying to, this process will vary and may not include some of the steps below but we will aim to keep you updated every step of the way!

We know that applications can be long and daunting to say the least. We've got your back and will provide you with as much as we can for you to be your best!

Click on the application stages below for our tips and guidance on what to expect throughout the process.

Online application

This is the first step that you could be taking to start your career! Applications don’t need to be scary but you want to be sure that you are applying for the right scheme before you start so do plenty of research first.

We have tried to keep our application forms simple. We ask you about yourself and your skills so the most important thing is to be honest and keep your answers relevant. Refer back to the job description to help you and consider listing your experiences and skills on a piece of paper next to you so you don’t forget the essential stuff.

We might ask you for your CV but we don’t shortlist on this or any portfolio work that you might have uploaded to your Careers Hub profile so boost your application by mentioning the right stuff to the relevant question and remember to stick to those word limits and check your grammar and spelling before hitting the ‘Submit’ button!

We promise that we will be in touch as soon as possible after weighing up each application.

Video Interview

Firstly take a deep breath because we promise that a video interview isn’t as scary as it sounds! Our video interview is automated, there is no one on the other side of the screen, grilling you and you have plenty of time to answer.

When you are invited, you are provided with a link which takes you to a portal allowing you to record your video interview. It’s only compatible with a few web browsers and devices, so be sure to read the email that we send you which lists the details.

Remember this is your opportunity to show us your personality, so if you write down what you are going to say then keep it out of sight and try not to read it while you are recording so that you can focus on making eye contact with the camera.

Rehearse your answer before pressing ‘Record’ – Give yourself time to be comfortable and confident with what you are saying and then you can let your personality do the rest of work.

Online Test

For some of our schemes, you may be asked to complete an online test.

These can range from a psychometric or technical test to a writing test to show us your editorial skills. The best way to prepare is to read the email we send to you about the test very carefully, what are we asking you to do and how can you prepare?

For example, there are practice psychometric tests online and this is a good way to familiarise yourself with them before doing one.

Finally, give yourself plenty of time to complete the test before the deadline.

Assessment Centre

Our assessment centres usually involve of a few different parts - One or two group exercises, an individual interview and sometimes, a written test or technical test. In your email invitation, we will let you know what to expect from the day.

We understand that these can be daunting but the team are super friendly and try to put you at ease as best as we can. At assessments centres you will get to meet the recruitment team, scheme managers, mentors, and in some cases current apprentices and trainees. We encourage you to network and ask those burning questions you’ve been dying to ask!

Interview

For only a few of our schemes, you will be invited to a final interview following attending an assessment centre. The interview will be tailored to the scheme and department that you are being considered for so make sure you do your research! Be prepared to tell us why you have applied for the scheme and how you can demonstrate your passion for the industry.
