2027 Year in Industry Placement

Introduction:

Heraeus Electro-Nite UK is inviting applications for a 12-14 month placement starting in July 2027. The work will involve research and development in measurements for molten metals, particularly molten steel; possible work may include continuous temperature or gas measurements.

The placement is suitable for students studying materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering or a related subject. Previous molten-metal experience is not required.

Position Overview

  • Assisting in the design, development, and testing of mechanical engineering solutions.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive engineering projects from concept to completion.
  • Conducting research and gathering data to support engineering analyses and evaluations.
  • Contributing to the optimisation of existing products or processes through continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Supporting the troubleshooting and resolution of technical issues.
  • Participating in meetings, workshops, and training sessions to expand knowledge.

Requirements

  • Right to work in UK
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering or a related subject.
  • Strong academic record with a focus on mechanical engineering principles and practices.
  • Solid understanding of CAD software and other engineering tools.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts and ideas.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proactive and self-motivated with a willingness to learn and take on new challenges.

HEN UK Facilities:

  • Mechanical: Comprehensive machining workshop (manual & CNC equipment), welding, and fabrication equipment. Materials & mechanical test equipment.
  • Materials: Including refractory manufacturing and testing equipment, materials and mechanical properties test laboratory, Liquid metal (steel plant) testing, SEM, optical microscopes, and sample preparation labs.
