Carsten Greenways

Global Graduate Leadership Development Programme

Please share a bit of background about you including your degree, where you heard about the programme and what made it attractive to you.

My name is Carsten Greenways, I’m from Malvern, Pennsylvania (outside of Philadelphia), but I’ve spent the past 5 years in Pittsburgh studying at the University of Pittsburgh and now working at Chromalox. I studied Business Management, specialising in Supply Chain & HR, and appreciated the dual focus on people & processes, as I think it offers a valuable perspective. I was increasingly interested due to the Programme’s rotational scheme offering international exposure across functions.

What rotations have you done on the programme so far & how has each benefitted your development? If this is your first rotation, please share what you are hoping to do next and why.

My first rotation – and only so far – has been in the Strategic Sourcing function at Chromalox. Through this, I was involved in leading a global category review of pressure vessels, managing outreach campaigns regarding our sustainability commitments to suppliers, and assisting as the Electrical Thermal Solutions (ETS) function looks to integrate its Supply Chain function across its 4 businesses.

In my next rotation I will be traveling to the UK to work in the Steam Business Development in the Sector & Insights team. Here, I will be working to develop an aftermarket strategy for the OEM sector along with other initiatives with SSP pricing policy and strategic positioning. I look forward to transitioning across the value chain and expanding my knowledge on sales strategy and sector management.

What is your current role & what does a typical day look like for you?

In my first rotation, a typical day was spent between working on the category review, which involved pulling attributes out of JDE and compiling data in Excel, or assisting with our supplier sustainability outreach campaigns, emailing and phoning suppliers about the SSC agreement.

Outside of this work, I would sit in Teams calls related to our third-party logistics services (freight booking, auditing, forwarding, etc.) to gain a deeper sense of the Strategic Sourcing function. Week to week, I looked to schedule coffee chats with other grads and people in similar functions across the group to build a deeper understanding of the business and its functions.

How has the culture in your OpCp allowed you to make difference or have an impact?

Chromalox – Pittsburgh is a smaller OpCo without a manufacturing facility and is undergoing rapid change and growth with the integration of Electric Thermal Solutions. This has allowed me two things over the course of my rotation – autonomy and opportunity. I was able to work independently on multiple projects without strict oversight, and get involved in multiple projects and initiatives across the supply chain.
