I studied Geography at uni because I’ve always been curious about how the world works—both people and the planet. I was especially interested in how human activity affects the environment, and I knew I wanted a job where I could actually make a difference.
After graduating, I wanted to keep learning, but in a more hands-on way. That’s what led me to Severn Trent’s Operational and Environmental Leadership graduate scheme!
The rotational placements really stood out to me. I loved the idea of exploring different parts of the business while keeping that environmental focus. I didn’t know much about Severn Trent when I applied, but wow—there’s so much going on behind the scenes to treat water and waste. It’s been eye-opening!
Loads! I kicked things off in the Waste Operational Control Centre, getting a big-picture view of how we manage incidents. Then I joined the River Protection team as a Community Engagement Scientist—working with citizen science groups to improve river health.
Now I’m in the Wastewater Recycling Improvement team, helping reduce spills. I love being out on site, seeing how things work, and being part of real change.
Before university, I didn’t even know a career in operations was an option. Since joining the scheme, I’ve discovered how much I enjoy solving problems and driving improvements.
Operations is still a male-dominated space, so being a woman here is something I’m proud of. I’ve found a role where I can grow, contribute meaningfully, and challenge myself every day. I hope my journey encourages others to explore opportunities they might not have considered!
No two days are the same. It’s fast-paced, full of challenges, and super rewarding. We have a massive impact on the environment and on people’s everyday lives. That sense of purpose is something really special.
I’ll be finishing the scheme next year, and I’m excited to see what’s next. I want to stay in operations and keep building my skills. There’s still so much to learn—and I’m here for it!
Think about what drives you. If you want to make a difference and work in a fast-moving, ever-changing environment, this could be your perfect match. The scheme is a brilliant way to explore the business and find your passion.
