Max Hacon

Graduate Engineer

What brought you into the building industry?

I never saw myself sitting behind a desk the whole day. During a week’s work experience with Sir Robert McAlpine, shadowing an engineer, I found the perfect fit for me.

What was it that impressed you about Sir Robert McAlpine?

The world class projects they work on. But the main reason I joined was because they look after you. You really do become part of a family.

You’re in your first graduate role – what’s involved?

I’m working on a tower crane package for a project, managing the design and installation process of the foundations which they sit on, and managing the erection of the tower cranes themselves. Through assisting the Piling Package Engineer with the day-to-day running of the package, I’m getting to absorb as much of his knowledge and insights as possible.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Making a difference. With the tower crane package I am the last barrier before drawings become a reality and are built. It is great to get to site in the morning and see four tower cranes flying the McAlpine flag.

What are your future career ambitions?

To become a Chartered Engineer of the Institute of Civil Engineers. I will achieve this through the company’s Professional Development Scheme over the next five years. Beyond that I would like to follow the natural progression of my job, and ultimately add my mark to the London skyline.

What are the most important things you’ve learned here so far?

Make the most of the support your team can provide. And remember to have a laugh.

Which three words sum up Sir Robert McAlpine to you?

Family. Leaders. Future.

And finally, in one sentence, what would you say to anyone thinking of joining us?

Do it. You’ll join a family, work on fantastic projects and have a good laugh at the same time.
