Communications Troop Officer

Be the one others turn to

As a Communications Troop Officer, you’ll lead and motivate specialist soldiers responsible for the Army's communication systems. You could direct the construction of a headquarters on operations, designing and establishing communications networks across the battle space.

What makes an officer?
You'll be... A born leader. A problem solver. Curious.

You could also find yourself coordinating electronic warfare effects on enemy communications networks, protecting friendly networks or commanding armoured vehicles at the forefront of operations.

Our soldiers are amongst the most qualified in the Army and you will be expected to lead them in the field, in barracks and on Adventurous Training.

You’ll be part of the Royal Signals; the Army’s professional communicators. Fast moving and game changing, the Royal Signals are leaders in IT, Cyber and Telecommunications, providing battle-winning communications to every part of the Army.

The Royal Signals are experts in engineering and operating systems, networks and cyber equipment.

We look for leadership potential, a sense of purpose, and the drive to do great things. If you have those qualities, we can give you the training you need to improve your skills and develop in your career, and as an individual.

Whether you’re fresh out of school, have a university education, are professionally qualified, or already building a career, you can be part of something that really matters here.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work independently and think on your feet
  • Enjoy unrivalled travel opportunities
  • Access continued professional development throughout your entire career, including chartered status
  • Command either small specialist teams or large troops of up to 45 people straight out of training
  • Provide communications for British Army formations and work with other nations and governmental organisations

Start the adventure of a lifetime

As an entry-level Officer, you’ll start your career in a position of management, commanding responsibility for your team of soldiers. You don’t need any experience to apply – through world-class training at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, you’ll develop the transferrable leadership skills and qualifications you need to motivate and support your team.

Outside the Royal Military Academy, you’ll continue to learn and grow. Being an Officer is a global adventure, whether you’re leading expeditions, running operations abroad, or delivering humanitarian aid to communities in need.

During your training at Sandhurst, you’ll be an Officer Cadet, earning £33,183 a year. As you progress through our ranks, this will rise to £44,457 for a Captain, and £55,999 when you become a Major.

You’ll also receive 38 days’ annual leave every year (plus bank holidays and extra leave after operations), free medical and dental care, cheaper living costs, and free gym and sports facilities. And unless you're away on operations or training exercises, you'll normally work 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
