The Energy Innovation Centre (“EIC”) was launched in 2008 to accelerate the discovery, development and deployment of innovation for the Energy industry to achieve net zero by 2050. At the EIC, we support the innovation ambitions of our industry partners from the gas and electricity sectors by helping them discover new technologies that meet their challenges.
The EIC: Who We Are
Find out where the EIC began, who we are, and where we're going in this short informational video.
We do this by constantly searching for new ideas from around the world that have the potential to be game-changing for energy consumers, the supply chain and the industry itself. Once we have identified these ideas and technologies, we help the people behind them to get access to the large energy companies and together help drive these innovations to the next stage of their development.
About the Role
We have a great opportunity for an ambitious University graduate specialising in full-stack development in AI and Data to join our team and play a key role in delivering our AI adoption acceleration programme. The EIC is currently developing a suite of internal AI tools (including custom GPTs, ChatBase agents, and custom LLM integrations) that support our work with stakeholders and partners.
In this unique hybrid position, you will have ownership of your solutions and the opportunity to make a real-world impact. You will direct the architecture, development, and refinement of our AI applications, transitioning prototypes into robust and scalable software solutions that directly contribute to energy innovation.
Key Responsibilities
AI Tools Development and Refinement: Lead the development, integration and scaling of internal and external AI tools. Build robust pipelines to connect LLMs with our internal databases and workflows. Further develop and maintain existing AI tools such as our “Feedback Quality Assessor” AI tool and “Volta AI”.
AI Horizon Scanning: Monitor emerging AI tools, technologies and use cases, including developments across the energy networks sector, to help the EIC identify opportunities and practical applications.
AI-Enabled Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to augment EIC processes using AI, helping to improve efficiency, consistency and quality while maintaining appropriate human oversight.
Cross-functional Collaboration and Team Upskilling: Act as the technical bridge between AI systems and non-technical stakeholders, lead team upskilling by explaining technical reasoning, methodology and AI capabilities in a clear and accessible way.
Key requirements and skills for the role
Educational: BSc degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science or a related STEM discipline
Software Engineering: Proficiency in full-stack software development with experience in relevant programming languages (e.g. Python, SQL, JavaScript, Java).
AI/ML Experience: Hands-on experience developing AI agents, and in-depth knowledge of ML technologies.
Prompt Engineering & Evaluation: Advanced ability to engineer complex prompts and evaluate AI/ML results.
Communication: Excellent ability to translate complex technical concepts and AI behaviours to non-specialist team members.
Analytical Thinking: Pro-active problem solver with a keen eye for detail, particularly in reviewing structured outputs and debugging AI logic.
Desirables
Familiarity with cloud deployment platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
Industry experience in developing, deploying, and maintaining AI software applications within a regulated or industrial environment.
A strong interest in the application of AI within regulated, industrial, or energy environments.
Passion for sustainability and driving the transition to Net Zero.
Pay and benefits:
Salary depending on skills and experience
25 days' annual leave with the option to purchase additional holidays
