Across a country – The challenges of moving for a job 150 miles from home!
Few are fortunate enough to find a dream job in their hometown, though not all of us imagine a search to take us halfway across the country. After accepting a place on Sondrel’s graduate programme, I found myself with months to move before I’d be starting work. How hard could it be to find somewhere?
Pretty tough, it turns out. Even without a global pandemic, needing the best part of a day travelling to view a home and time off work to do so meant many options disappeared before I could see them at all. For those I did get to see, other issues arose. From availability not matching the advert to a flat not actually being finished, there was always something... Until I took a leap of faith and placed a holding deposit on a one bedroom flat with a video tour.
Three days before starting work, me and my dad set off in our laden cars for the 3-hour drive south. A hectic weekend of furniture assembly, IKEA trips and cleaning spilled curry resulted in a comfortable space just in time for starting work the next day.
