Surrey BioSoc Society

Welcome to the University of Surrey’s BioSoc Society!

We are a Biosciences Departmental Society made of a friendly and welcoming community of bioscience-degree related students or anyone interested in this field. Whether you’d like to develop your career and employability prospects further or just want an opportunity to make friends, this is the place for you!

We regularly host a broad range of academic and social events. These include external guest speakers from the industry or alumni, study sessions, day trips and opportunities to develop scientific skills. Our fun social events, such as but not limited to: movie nights, quizzes, games night, pub crawls and a BioSoc Ball aim to help our members relax and have a good time. We also collaborate with other societies and raise money for charity.

As a society, we ambitiously strive to bring plentiful opportunities for our members during their time at university. Additionally, we are supported by the Royal Society of Biology and are a Bright Network Society Partner for 2023/24.

BioSoc Rebrand

Ever since the earliest record of its existence back in 2010, BioSoc has gone through many new changes. This year, we are proud to announce our latest exciting transformation, a new rebrand! This involves a new change in logo, for a fresh modern look and signals a new era of direction.

Open Days/Freshers Fair

Here we promote our society and the benefits of joining. As well as meeting potential new members!

Meet & Greet

For a fun evening, members get the chance to be formally introduced to the new committee members for the year and meet other fellow members! There will be lots of ice-breaker games, activities, and amazing prizes.

BioSoc Magazine

For the first time in its history, we will be launching our very own student made magazine with articles about the latest developments in biosciences! Members will have the opportunity to create their own written piece about a current scientific topic that interests them.

Events/Socials

Thinking Future Thursdays

Is when external guest speakers from a variety of different scientific backgrounds come along in-person or online to discuss their career journey amongst other exciting topics. This allows students to explore possibilities they may not have considered or further elaborate on their interests.

Study Groups

We host chill study groups in person or online in our discord server.

Bar Crawls

Our infamous and widely attended event boasts a fun night in Guildford, bar hopping to the hottest places in town. Our past events were themed such as: “Back To School” and “Halloween” or fun collaborations with other STEM societies.

Quiz Nights

In collaboration with other science and health societies, this fun trivia night came along with equally fun group names!

Movie Nights - BioSoc Cinema

Sit back, relax, grab some popcorn, and delve into the world of science and entertainment with BioSoc movie nights (now rebranded as BioSoc Cinema). We’ve featured a range of different genres over the past years, including much loved nature/animal documentaries too. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Charity Events/Fundraisers

BioSoc loves raising money for a good cause and so do our members. We’ve had eager participation from our members for our bake sales and a much-loved fundraiser “Throw Pie at your Lecturers”!

BioSoc Ball

An evening not to be missed, this is BioSoc’s classiest and most elegant event of the year. Highly attended, the fights for tickets are fierce for a night of guaranteed amazing entertainment. It’s also a brilliant way for members to celebrate the end of the year.

Other events that we’ve done are bowling, scavenger hunts, day trips to museums, paint balling, arts & crafts, and sports tournaments with other science societies.
