DMU Hacking Society

DMUHackers is an Ethical Hacking and Cyber Security society based at De Montfort University. We have weekly sessions covering all aspects of cyber security ranging from blue team SOC work and forensic analysis to red team TTPs and penetration testing techniques.

The society also hosts social events for its members including a weekly social after sessions to allow members to network and create friendships, and special one-off socials such as a Christmas Meal, Karaoke night, and a hackers branded pub quiz!

We welcome members primarily from Cyber Security, Digital Forensics, and Computer Science degrees; however all degrees and specialties are welcome at the society!

CTF Events

Doing CTFs is one of the best ways you can practise your skills and be challenged to find new and unique ways at defeating challenges. The society participates in a few CTF events per year including the HTB University CTF and most recently the University of Edinburgh’s pwnED CTF. The pwnED CTF event was the first in person CTF event since the pandemic, with the team finishing a very respectable 5th place (the highest of any non-Russell Group university). These CTF events also look good on your CV and are great talking points in interviews, especially for questions about how you solved a problem.

Pwn2Play University CTF

Pwn2Play is something that we ran for the first time in the 24/25 academic year, it is a DMUHackers run CTF open to any student or organisation in the UK and overseas, in its first year we saw participants from 30+ universities and organisations such as the Royal Navy. This year we aim to go above and beyond to involve more universities and organisations. This is a jeopardy style event covering a range of subjects from OSINT to Malware Analysis. Challenges are pitched at all levels from beginner to advanced!

Christmas Social

The Christmas Social is a yearly event where members can all get together and have a sit down meal. Friends and partners of members are also welcome to the Christmas Social as we believe making friends and having experiences is an important part of being in a university society. With the society being focused at a very specific topic and heavily learning based, being able to relax and speak to fellow members in a slightly different setting we believe is important.

Halloween Social

The halloween social was an opportunity to let go a bit. We followed our usual weekly social plan but our brilliant members participated in fancy dress. It was important to us as a society that it wasn’t mandatory as we want all members to feel welcomed, however doing something a little different and seeing such a great turnout was a really special night for the society and opened up doors to potentially do something similar in the future.

Pwn2Play CTF 2026

Request for Involvement

DMU Hacking Society are a Cyber Security-focused society based at De Montfort University.

On the 30th May 2026, we will be hosting our Pwn2Play CTF event for the second time. In 2025 for our first year of this event, we managed to attract companies such as the MoD to participate and had 30+ teams playing between the in-person/online categories. It was a major success and now the bar has been set high to create an even better event in 2026.

P2P is a jeopardy style CTF with various categories testing all areas of Cyber Security knowledge; last year we had 10 categories spanning OSINT, reverse engineering, full-pwn and many more.

As part of this, we are looking for organisations to participate as any of the following:

  • Participating team/s
  • Challenge Creator’s
  • Sponsor of the event

We appreciate you taking the time to consider this opportunity; we hope that it can be mutually beneficial for your organisation as much as it will benefit us as a society.

The QR Code will link you to the official server for the event, where you can contact an event organiser or you can contact us via the email address dmuhackers@gmail.com.
