The Imperial College Physics Society

Socials, talks and conferences, careers events and competitions... where else than PhySoc? The Imperial College Physics Society offers a wide range of free events to all who study or are interested in this beautiful science.

We have weekly lab tours and guest speaker events for those who are interested in going into research as well as career fairs and industry talks for those looking for internships and graduate placements. Additionally, throughout the year we will host larger events such as the Researchathon or the boat party and Christmas dinner.

Blackett Debate

On the 20/11, PhySoc and Debate Soc teamed up to deliver a thrilling debate within the walls of the Blackett Laboratory. Motion of the day: "This House Regrets the Manhattan Project".

Warwick Imperial Maths Conference (WIMP)

A series of student-led talks on fascinating mathematics and its adjacent fields, with speakers from both Warwick University and Imperial College.

Researchathon

Participants from different natural science departments will be given 24 hours to research a topic from several prompts and create a presentation with their results which will then be judged by professors and sponsors. This year's brand new Researchathon was a great success - thank you to everyone who took part!

PhySoc vs ChemSoc football match

The first matchup of the season for our PhySoc football team was against ChemSoc. The series of games ended 0-0 1-0 and 2-1 in favour of PhySoc!

Stargazing

Together with the Astronomy Society we organise stargazing events on the rooftop of the Blackett building. This is usually a great opportunity to see star clusters or planets through a research-grade telescope.

Outreach at Fem in STEM event

As women are still very underrepresented in physics, we presented our society to a Fem in STEM event at Dame Alice Owen School and will visit others in the coming academic year.

Lab tours

To show students different research fields they can go into we run lab tours. Here on the photo Prof Lebedev is explaining undergraduate students the MAGPIE experiment at Imperial College that uses high currents to investigate the behaviour of shock plasmas.

PhySoc parents

Second to fourth year students can sign up to become parents to freshers to guide them through the year. This creates healthy family competition and a social network for freshers who come to university not knowing anyone yet.

London Physics Conference

Together with the other physics societies in London we organise a colloquium where students and researchers can present topics they are passionate about to a large audience from different universities.

PhySoc boat party

Every year in spring the Physics Society hosts a boat party on the Thames going past landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament and the HMS Belfast all while celebrating the end of the year with peers.
