We are a dynamic, student-led engineering society dedicated to the innovation and development of hydrogen racing vehicles. We're the University of Glasgow's first hydrogen-based society as well as the first team to represent UofG at competition in MONACO in 2025!
Supporting Sustainability
Playing our part in the transition to a net-zero future by shining a spotlight on the use of hydrogen as a clean energy source in the transport sector. Driving research and funding especially for automotive, marine and aeronautical applications.
Shaping our Students
Building up our students by offering them an outlet to express their creativity, gain hands on experience and preparing them for the professional world by providing opportunities to present, lead, work in cross-functional teams and work on real life engineering problems.
Contributing to the Community
Making meaningful contributions to our community participating in outreach - educating our youth about careers in STEM and instilling a passion for engineering from a young age. As well as, promoting equality and inviting more females to pursue careers in STEM.
The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (MEBC), was established in 2014, with the mission “Engineering the future of yachting”. Hosted by the Yacht Club de Monaco, the MEBC is a prestigious marine student engineering competition pioneering change in terms of sustainability.
The Shell Eco-Marathon, established in 1985, is a premier global energy- efficiency engineering competition that challenges students to push the boundaries of innovation and future energy solutions.
For nearly 40 years, it has exemplified Shell's mission of "Powering Progress Together" by fostering perseverance, collaboration, and creativity among young change-makers.
HFR represented Scotland for the first time at the 12th Edition of the MEBC in 2025. We plan to return and put on a strong performance at the 13th Edition in 2026. We competed with PlusZero’s Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (HICE) powered hydrofoil boat. A true testament to innovation, sustainable propulsion and elegant design. The boat turned many heads and was placed on display, drawing a special interest from the Prince of Monaco.
Although the result wasn’t exactly what we had in mind… the event was a huge success for HFR. We scouted out our competition, took notes of what we need to win, worked on the boat in the beautiful Monaco marina and most importantly had fun. A night at the Casino de Monte-Carlo, Sponsored Dinners and a beach trip to Nice!
HFR had an incredible opportunity at the Summerlee STEM Event! We introduced children to the exciting world of 3D printing, showing them how to use it and guiding them through the basics of 3D design. Through interactive activities, they learned how to create simple designs. These designs including their own initials, this gave them a hands-on experience with this amazing technology!
Led by our co-founder, Abdullah Musanna, this event marked HFR’s first-ever outreach activity as a society. The enthusiasm and curiosity we saw from both the kids and their parents was truly inspiring. STEM education is at the heart of what HFR do, we are passionate about making these subjects accessible, engaging, and fun for young minds.

UG Hydrogen Fuel Racing collaborated with FemEng: Empowering Women in Engineering to host an incredibly successful applications workshop.
A special thanks to Fraser Hirst Talent Acquisition and Marketing Specialist, for partnering with HFR and delivering a motivating and engaging talk. The session covered everything from assessment centres and interview skills to aptitude tests and methodologies for improving our chances in these areas.
We hope this is just the first of many workshops in an ongoing series! Our vision is to expand the reach of these events and bring in more collaborators - whether sponsors, partners, or fellow societies. At HFR, we take pride in equipping our members with the essential soft skills that will serve them well in their future endeavours.
