LUMotorsport is made up of a number of students studying various degrees from Automotive Engineering to Business Management. Unlike other Formula Student teams, LUMotorsport is entirely organised and run by the student members, with guidance from the academic and technical staff only when required.
This means that the team is not only responsible for producing a new car every year, but also all finances, health and safety, and the business side of running a motorsport team. This tough task is made even more difficult by the fact that all of the work must be done around the team members on going degree courses. After about 8 months of build and 1 months of testing the team will then compete against other universities in the Formula Student Competition.
Held in a series of international locations, this design competition challenges Formula Student teams from all over the world to put their car and their team through a series of tough challenges. From an endurance 22km stint that tests the car's reliability to a series of events that test the team's knowledge of the car's design and cost, Formula Student events always prove to be enriching, social and challenging experiences.
"I can reflect on all that we’ve accomplished this year at Loughborough University Motorsport. LFS25 brought the team’s first ever monocoque, a new accumulator, creative aero package and a re-designed and manufactured electronics system. With all these changes came endless challenges and uphill struggles for everyone involved. Yet, to stand on the other side of it all watching the car race around the top floor of a University Multi-Storey car park, and even drive it, makes all the work worth it.
A year ago, I proposed the two major changes from Sam and Rob in the first Full Team Meeting, to which most people thought was I crazy. However, for the first time since going electric, we had a car that had spun wheels before attending FSUK. Unfortunately, a delay in sorting TSAL and BSPD issues meant we were around 2 hours away from dynamic running. The full FSUK results can be found on the next page alongside some post event running details and images.
This marks the end of my year as Team Leader as I pass this role on to Euan Deighton, our Controls Lead from LSF25, who is going into his final year of a Master's having completed a placement at Red Bull Racing a year ago.
I am incredibly proud of what this team has achieved and to be able to provide LFS26 with a running car. Feel free to keep in touch with all the graduates on LinkedIn as all of our final year accounts are lost this week.
Finally, we could not have produced this car without the support of all sponsors and Loughborough University so thank you from all of us at LUMotorsport and I look forward to seeing what the team produces over the next year!"
