KCL Women in Computer Science (WiCS)

We’re a society aimed at supporting and uplifting gender minorities in Computer Science. We aim to tackle gender bias in technology by providing a space and community for minority groups.

Our events range from coding workshops and industry panels to socials. With every event we continue fostering a community for minorities in Computer Science and provide the support for these students to succeed in future career opportunities.

Despite being a more recently formed society, we are already being recognised for the impact we’re making on uplifting diversity in technology. We became a Silver Society in 2021/2022 and our membership continues to grow every year.

WiCS 2023 Welcome Event

A potluck dinner to create a sense of community between new and old members. A great way to start off the year by connecting students interested in Computer Science!

2023 KCL Tech Summit

We were honoured to be able to collaborate with KCLTech in hosting the annual TechSummit. This aimed to help students learn more about the various pathways available to them in the field of technology. The summit consisted of various industry and academic speaker panels, along with stalls held by different tech companies to give students insight into the different opportunities awaiting them during and after university.

C++ Coding Workshop

Our first coding workshop of the year, held by our committee members at both beginner and intermediate levels. The workshop helped to support both computer science students with their course, as well as introduce other students to C++.

Trans Awareness Festival Kahoot Quiz

In honor of promoting diversity in the computer science field, we hosted a Kahoot pub quiz to celebrate the Trans Awareness Festival. This was an educational but relaxing social event for our members.

Java Workshops

To support our first-year computer science students, we held a Java workshop! This was a great opportunity to introduce students to the language, while simultaneously allowing students that were working on Java projects to receive assistance.

2024 Post-Exam Movie Night

January is a busy month for our members, and can be overwhelming due to the exam season. To help de-stress after the exams, WiCS hosted a movie night to give our members a relaxing, social evening, as well as any support needed.

LGBTQ Kahoot Pub Quiz

Staying true to our theme of both social and educational events, WiCS hosted another quiz night to raise awareness towards the LGBTQ+ community, one of the underrepresented groups in the field of technology that we aim to support.

Breaking the Code 2024

Our big annual event! Breaking the Code is a panel and networking event designed to introduce students to the opportunities awaiting them during and after university. The event consists of both women in academia and women in industry panels, to give our members an idea of what it is like to be from an underrepresented group while working in the field of Technology. With one of the biggest turnouts of all our events this year, students were able to ask questions and network with professionals.
