The Greenwich Mathematics Society (GMS) is a student-ran society, reformed in 2023. We have amassed over two hundred members since our return.
Organising study sessions, workshops, trips, and collaborations has created a sense of community amongst students, which we have fostered through a harmonious relationship with the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (CMS).
Continuing from last year, SUMS 2025 saw us invite maths societies from across London to Greenwich for an afternoon of student talks, board games, and a specially written quiz by Chalkdust Magazine! This event was kindly sponsored by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
Niyati Gupta spoke on "The Mathematics of your Brain", delving into the relationship between brain gyrification (wrinkling) and intelligence. Polin Hossain discussed modelling a sci-fi rail gun in real life, utilising AI to initially investigate various ideas to bring it to life, alongside hand-drawn sketches.
Attendees enjoyed refreshments (pictured) paid for by the IMA and board games supplied by Tony Mann, one of our lecturers. All in all, SUMS 2025 proved to be a really fun afternoon to meet & reconnect with fellow students.

Tony Mann delivered a perplexing hour of maths tricks and magical card decks. GMS members got to learn first-hand how to use Tony's cards to predictively spell names and how to turn someone's birthday into a perfect 3x3 grid where each row, column, and diagonal summed to the same figure.

On the year of the 50th anniversary of the Rubik's cube, we invited back Neil Saunders to host his second Rubik's Cube Workshop with us. Neil, a former University of Greenwich lecturer, took his students through a step-by-step solution to the standard 3x3 Rubik's Cube, while other attendees battled one another in speedcubing (competing to rapidly solve a 3x3). Hats off to Rhianna Solly, who boasted a sub-60 second solve time!
