The University of Portsmouth IT Society

The UOP IT Society is an academic society for everyone interested in computing. If you’re curious about coding, a weathered Linux user, or anywhere in between, we have something for you. We offer a space where students can network, expand their skill set, and meet like-minded individuals passionate about tech.

We also regularly unwind, providing spaces for members who want to relax, have fun, and take a break from the digital world. Throughout the year, we host a variety of educational and fun events including:

  • Lightning Talks from Industry Leaders – Meet industry experts and learn the tricks of the trade with us.
  • Social Nights – Meet up and make new friends.
  • Hacktoberfest Workshops – Get some practice and contribute to open-source code.
  • Advent of Code - Join us in a coding battle where we go head to head to beat programming puzzles over the course of December.
  • Seasonal Meals – Get some great food and company.
  • Participation in Computing Events – Take on exciting challenges like Hackathons and Capture the Flag.
  • Interview Challenges and Placement Opportunities – Prepare for the future with interview practice, help with placement applications and make the first steps into your professional career.

We are entirely free to join and open to any department and discipline across the university. Whether you’re here to build your skills, meet new people, or have fun, the IT Society has something for everyone.

Projects
  • Open-Source Website (Upcoming):
    • We own the domain itsociety.co.uk. We plan to create a template for an open source website, such that the domain and website template can potentially be sublet to other societies.
  • We have recreated the classic game "Snake" in React.
  • We have created a "moody" chatbot, using artificial intelligence - one could tell it to speak in a certain mood and its responses would be determined by its mood.
Events/Trips/Socials

Touch Grass

When the weather is good, we run the "Touch Grass" event. We escape the city for a while and just go for a walk in nature.

Board Games

We often meet at a local Lounge and play many different types of board games.

We also...

  • Regularly host hackathons for the whole school of computing. We own computing assets available for use in these sessions to both give everyone a level playing field and to provide restrictions, encouraging creativity.
  • Host academic support sessions where people can come to confer with fellow students about any coursework or to simply be a place where people can sit down and crack on with work surrounded by knowledgeable people.
  • Provide some support for students in other schools who must learn programming as part of their course.
  • Have Microsoft Azure Courses running throughout the year, where members can take away a real qualification.
Committee List
  • Brendan Skeet - President
  • Anna Kennewell - Treasurer
  • Keita Vebere - Wellfare Officer
  • Mohammad Elfayez - Events Secretary
  • Sam Blewitt - Media Secretary
