The Women in STEM (WiSTEM) Society at the University of Glasgow is a student-led society for students of any degree who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
We are here to promote, support and celebrate Women in STEM!
We aim to connect women in all areas of STEM through socials, academic events and outreach events. We hold panel debates, networking days and workshops to develop our members’ skills. These events allow for the stories and opinions of women in this sector to be heard and inspire our members.
We host workshop days with schools in Glasgow (typically primary or lower secondary years), where our members can run fun & engaging activities to share their passion for their subject with young students who might not have previously thought about a future in STEM. We hope that through these, we can keep encouraging young women into STEM careers & break stereotypes in the industry!
Outreach activitiesWiSTEM aim to influence the younger generation, particularly young girls, to enter STEM careers. To achieve this, we coordinate outreach programs that engage local primary school students (P5-P7) through interactive workshops in physical science, life science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. By visiting schools that may lack access to such opportunities, we hope the pupils see science subjects in a new light. Our recent success, involving 150 students, highlighted the positive impact of these initiatives. |

Social eventsWe organise social events for all our members throughout the academic year. These range from yoga classes to pub crawls so there is always something for everyone! Our social events are a great way for people to come along and meet other women studying STEM subjects at the University of Glasgow. These events often take place on campus or in local businesses in and around the West End area of Glasgow. One of these events was a halloween pub-crawl where members dressed as their worst nightmare, which was so much fun! |

FundraisingFor the past two years, WiSTEM has proudly supported Glasgow Women’s Aid as its chosen charity. Glasgow Women’s Aid provides essential support, resources, and temporary refuge for women, children, and young people experiencing domestic abuse. To raise funds, WiSTEM hosts a variety of exciting events, including pub quizzes, ceilidhs, and bake sales. We also collaborate with other university societies, such as the Physics Society and the Zoological Society, to support additional charities like Black Beetle health. |

At WiSTEM, we host a diverse range of activities, events, and socials, and we are committed to continually expanding our offerings to better suit our members' interests and needs. Understanding that not everyone can attend every event, we provide detailed blog posts that capture key points and takeaways.
Our blog content ranges from comprehensive descriptions of CV and career events to personalised posts about topics that benefit our viewers, such as managing study stress, maintaining work-life balance, and our continuing Hidden Women in STEM series.
Additionally, we provide an opportunity for our WiSTEM members to write their own blog posts during semester 2, as we always want to encourage member engagement and diverse perspectives!
