We're MIS - The North West's first university intelligence society. Our HQ is The University of Manchester...
The aim of MIS is to help students from all different backgrounds (not just cyber students) develop their critical thinking and decision-making skills in national security contexts. We’ll be running intelligence analysis competitions, similar to that of the Cyber Leaders Challenge, workshops (e.g. OSINT), seminars on history and espionage, debates on ethics in intelligence, social events, and much more. We want students to get a taste of the different types of intelligence and also network with professionals.
Our society is open to UoM students of ANY discipline: whether you’re seeking real-world readiness, aiming to develop soft skills like public speaking, leadership, and adaptability, or simply curious about the world of intelligence.
…and much more!
MIS is partnering with the cyber security society - Hackchester - to deliver a workshop on Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques. It will be a fun, interactive and engaging session where students will have some theory and practical elements and have challenges to complete to develop their technical skills.
Students have the option to work together or individually and write a mini report too, stepping into the role of an intelligence analyst. The team or individual with the best report wins a prize!
…and some intelligence panel sessions, a careers fair and special events we’re keeping under wraps for now…
MIS welcomed officers from the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit (NWROCU) / North West Cyber Resilience Centre (NWCRC) to campus! We all learnt valuable lessons in cyber security and engaged in a spectacular session of team-based puzzle solving! A detective’s dream…
All teams managed to escape - the earliest completion time being 24 minutes! Winners took home a mighty MIS badge and we all bagged some NWROCU pens.
A massive thank you to the two officers that came down and ran this - many laughs and a very insightful networking session at the end.
MIS and Hackchester joined forces with BAE Systems Digital Intelligence to unleash a fullβthrottle day of cyber security challenges and games.
The atmosphere was electric. Pizza on tap. Students from CS, psychology, linguistics and beyond threw themselves into the deep end, cracking challenges, pushing limits, and forming powerhouse interdisciplinary squads. Challenges included, but were not limited to, reverse engineering, forensic searches, web security, trivia and packet analysis.
Huge thanks to the BAE Systems crew for bringing the heat, running an incredible CTF, and keeping spirits skyβhigh all day.
An informal pub crawl with a dress code: spy! We had a main mission where students had to gather "intel" on other attendees. There was a "secret agent" that they needed to identify. There was also side missions for everyone to complete, which was revealed on our socials!
MISsion impossible? We think not! MIS hosted their first panel session in December...
We welcomed professionals in cyber, crime, national security, and intelligence to campus for an afternoon of insight and intrigue. The session explored what they do day-to-day, the skills needed to thrive in this space, how AI is changing intelligence work, current threats and real-life cases they've been involved in, and whether or not ethics goes out the window when making certain calls.
Then, we wrapped up with a Q&A. Our audience were curious and engaged, eager to know what the field of intelligence really entails beyond the various portrayals in films, games and other media, how data is usually secured and they gained insight into Covert Human Intelligence Sources (CHIS) and much more...
A huge thank you to our panellists from the following organisations for a wonderful discussion:
We felt heavily inspired by everyone. Very thought-provoking indeed!
Each society had their own section for the quiz and prizes were up for grabs. Ours involved questions on topics such as key figures in espionage history, Bond's cocktails, and who writes in green ink...
MIS took home some vouchers for winning - massive thanks to Women in Tech!
We are still recruiting for the committee (core team, events team, social media & PR team, video content creation team, R&A…)
