Manchester Chemistry Society

We are a student-led society that serves as the central hub for the Chemistry students at the University of Manchester.

Our unique strength lies in offering weekly support at ChemUnity in collaboration with our department that integrates academic studies, professional development, and essential social connections.

The facts
Home to the most famous chemistry experiment- Rutherford’s gold foil experiment, which first split the atom, was carried out at The University of Manchester.
We are entirely student ran, we’re here for students without owing anything to the chemistry department. Enabling us to support students in any potential issues that may arise with staff members or content of the course.
Our links to UoM school of natural sciences (SoNS) EDIA department ensures its not just a buzzword to us, it’s a part of our nucleus.
Graphene was discovered in Manchester! Something that our chemistry and physics departments compete over the credits of (of course chemistry deserves that crown).

Events

We aim to cover all aspects of university life with our events:

  • Nights Out - STEM students know how to work hard, play hard. ChemSoc’s infamous Lab Coat Pub Crawl isn’t to be missed.
  • Academics - ChemSoc’s guidance and support network is available year-round and boosted during exam seasons by hosting revision-centred events.
  • Career - Our members cover all levels of study, undergraduates, masters and PhD students: Manchester’s Chemistry Beehive offers guidance on the next steps.

ChemSoc Festive Markets Trip

Time for a study break is key for the run-up to winter break. ChemSoc aims to provide a platform for our members to explore Manchester’s winter market with course mates.

Manchester Central Food Bank Collection

Hosted alongside ChemUnity, located on central campus, ChemSoc led a foodbank collection. Our total donation exceeded expectations, and the committee were proud of the collection turnout.

Lab Coat Pub Crawl

A staple event in the ChemSoc calendar, at the start of each year we host a pub crawl through Manchester, adorning lab coats! The event is a great way to introduce freshers to the city and for chemistry students to socialise in iconic attire.
