Common forms of online testing
Numerical and logic-based reasoning
Numerical reasoning tests measure a candidate’s ability to understand, analyse and draw conclusions from numerical data.
They measure your ability to problem-solve, interpret data, find connections, identify patterns, think broadly and work through different possibilities in your head.
Personality tests
Companies use these tests to find candidates that would best fit the role, which is why it’s important to be true to yourself. If you try to second- guess what the employer is looking for, you could end up in a role that doesn’t suit you.
Situational Judgement Tests (SJTs)
These provide the employer with an indication of your behavioural and cognitive abilities, as well as your critical thinking, decision-making and judgement skills.
Game-based assessments
These often involve giving short, rapid responses or engaging in longer interactive scenarios, where employers can observe a candidate’s behaviour in action.

Hints & tips
Read the instructions!
Read the instructions and any preparation material you are given carefully. From this, you can determine approximately how long the test will take and allocate enough time to complete it without rushing.
Practice makes perfect
Practising will help you perform under pressure – particularly if it is timed. It will also help you to identify what the test is measuring and how you can best approach it.
Focus
Try to find a quiet space that is free from distractions so you can focus solely on the test. If you have any particular needs or concerns, discuss your circumstances with the employer as they’ll be happy to help.
Be honest
Understand what the employer is looking for and what the role requires prior to applying. However, don’t use that information to give inauthentic responses – to find your ideal role, you need to be true to yourself.
Ask for feedback
Online tests provide valuable insights that will increase your self- awareness – so it’s definitely worth asking for your results.
