Our Business

At HWM we design and manufacture monitoring and telemetry equipment for water, wastewater and gas networks, together with telemetry AMR and facilities optimisation products. Our primary focus for over 30 years has been clean water and network distribution system monitoring, however in the last few years we have expanded into new sectors which include gas, water and electricity meter consumption, gas network monitoring and sewer, river, and flood monitoring. Our solutions have had a significant impact in helping our customers save time, effort, natural resources, energy and cost.

HWM Graduate Engineering Scheme:

At HWM we believe our ability to deliver great technological solutions lies within our people. Finding and nurturing great talents is one of our key objectives. The HWM Graduate Engineering Scheme is aimed at finding and developing talents to become the HWM technical leaders of tomorrow. The scheme is focused on providing the graduate engineer with a comprehensive understanding of key design principles and disciplines available in HWM, through rotations in different teams and different assignments over a 2-year period; rotation will include assignments in the electronic engineering team, firmware software development, design assurance and application engineering.

The scheme will also give the opportunity to work and interact with other HWM business functions. At the end of the 2-year period, the graduate engineer will be offered a Junior Engineer position in one of the various engineering functions, depending on performance. The Role: As HWM Graduate Engineer you will be part of the HWM Engineering team and will report to the relevant functional manager, depending on the rotation phase; the first rotation will be in the design assurance department.

Main Tasks:

  • Taking on responsibility for product electronic designs and prototyping.
  • Develop + test solutions to problems to ensure product quality. Identify and recommend product improvements to improve technical performance.
  • Understanding, compiling and implementing/executing the implementation of customer requirements flow for hardware design through to internal and external suppliers.
  • Carrying out acceptance activities for products submitted by supplier organisations.
  • Provide support during qualification, test, and requirements management aspects of physical design, including EMC and radio performance.
  • Generate product documentation and maintenance of existing designs and drawings (schematic, BOM, PCB, cables etc.).
  • Carrying out feasibility studies for new technical innovations.
  • Attending meetings, writing reports and giving presentations to managers and clients.
  • Travel within UK and abroad may occasionally be required.

Experience and Skills Required

  • Excellent academic record in Electrical/Electronic/Firmware Engineering (minimum BEng, BSc or equivalent).
  • Experience/Knowledge of Analogue and Digital Design including: Microcontrollers, low power design, high-speed digital design, amplifiers, filters, ADC/DAC, designing for low cost/high volume and lithium battery power management.
  • Experience of simulation using Spice as well as schematic capture, PCB layout and library management (Altium or similar).
  • Self-motivated to work with minimal supervision on multiple simultaneous projects as part of a small team of engineers.
  • Good communication skills verbally and in writing (producing design documentation).
  • Knowledge of compliance requirements – CE, FCC, EMC, RoHS, etc.
  • Knowledge of activities related to product certification.
  • Practical experience of using test equipment such as logic/signal analysers, oscilloscopes, function generators, spectrum analysers, network analysers, multimeters etc.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience working in the design, implementation and testing of algorithms and digital signal processing.
  • Embedded firmware skills in C.
  • Strong modelling and analytical skills (ideally using in MATLAB or similar).
  • Radio system and antenna design including certification.
  • Design-in experience with microcontrollers such as ARM, AVR or MSP430. Experience with GSM/GPRS technology.
  • Power converter systems design.
  • FPGA/CPLD & HDL experience.
  • Audio systems design.
  • DFMEA/RA/DFM experience.
  • Experience of designing products for intrinsic safety (ATEX, IECEx, Hazloc).
  • Experience of working with/selection of contract electronics manufacturers.
  • Car driving license

Qualifications:

  • Educated to Degree level in a relevant field.
